I agree with thywar that is an impossible pick.
I don't think I could even pick a single author.
You take The Warren Commission Report, what a great work in fiction. Or Paradise Lost.
Alas Babylon, I just reread it this winter and it had much more meaning then it did the first time I read it at 17.
But for purposes of an answer I will agree with sirderrin and say The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour

I guess though I'll go with one that inspired the Marine Corps in me, and still does: Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson.
