They eat bugs and seeds
They don't eat plants, they don't eat your vegetables, they will eat the bugs off of your plants
They don't scratch and dig like chickens
They will catch flies out of the air, ticks you can't even see, they will grab mosquitoes out of the air
They do better free range
yes anything that can get to them will eat them, but if you let them run they will roost in trees at night like a turkey
On a bright nite an Owl may take one out of a tree, but a hawk can't touch um
They will kill every snake on the property, they hate snakes
don't expect to find their egg nest but if you do leave a few and they will keep laying in the same spot til they catch you
their eggs are richer than chicken eggs but smaller say 1 1/2 to 1.
Eggs or no they are worth it for their garden tending and their alarms
They will tell you every time a stray tree rat wonders on the place and they are loud
did I say they were loud, they are and it isn't a sound like anything else
they are a close relation to a peacock/fowl
it would be a shame to pen them, what good would that do you, but if you wanted them for eggs you could pen them in the AM and let them out at noon. They will come back into the pen at dark (maybe most) looking for the eggs they left and you can shut them up til noon again
but I wouldn't just let them run
if something starts getting them its time to hunt
besides, just get more
find a farmer who loves um and is overun with them and just go back and get more
for what they cost they are cheap in bug killin', snake killin and raising an alarm
you will get more fun just watching them then any old cat or dog and you don't even have to feed them, except in the worst part of winter
but on that first cold day the move in with you put them in a feed sack and take them back to the farmer (after dark) then go back in the spring and get new ones.
