From the flowerhead, I’m guessing aster, but I don’t know if they have taproots. Around here there are so many choices for tinder that I never tried an aster. I’m off to rack for the night and will leave it to you & MW to work it out. Thanks again :-)

I don't think its aster
its a tall bear stalk 4 to 5 feet tall with the stems with leaves just at the top 1 foot then the flowers at the vary ends

Pull one up roots and all and take it to the county extension office or a local college with a botanist.

Pull one up roots and all and take it to the county extension office or a local college with a botanist. Going to try and remember to take a look this spring and summer so I can see what it looks like from seed to mature plant. The reason I don't already know this is because I have no need of this plant until it's fall and the plant is dry and ready to burn.
