They blend in so well with the foliage. I was only about five feet in front of it when I noticed it. There was shade all around us except this one little circle of sun shining through and it was coiled in the sunshine of that circle. Since then I never carry a machete for protection from snakes. I now bring a long handled shovel. If they aren't a threat I let them alone. Most of the time they win!

Wow, that is awesome. Little bit of fisherman camera trickery, as was mentioned, but still awesome!
I've always heard that snakes can strike from the full length of their body. I wonder if that's still true when the snakes are huge like that?

According to the University of Florida the Eastern Diamondback can strike up to 2/3 the length of its body. A myth is rattlesnakes will rattle prior to striking. The rattling is just a nervous reaction and if you move away it will leave you alone. Striking is the only defense a snake has, other then retreating, and they will strike if they cannot retreat, or if you agitate them. Some strike without rattling, and goodness knows how many retreat without rattling that we have come close to but did not know it. I am not a snake lover, as a matter of fact I don't like snakes at all, but I will not kill one for the sake of killing a snake. They, including rattlesnakes, serve a useful purpose around the property keeping rodents and pests under control. I understand not everyone believes like I do, so whatever the situation calls for each has to make a choice as to what they will do at the time. Just stay safe! Jim
