I was just talking about this to the BIL this weekend. I have wanted to try this. I have a blackjack oak in the front yard, I would like to do something with them besides feed the squirrels.

Feed the squirrels, eat the squirrels

Unbelievably bitter and labor intensive (slow leaching process) to process the bitterness out. Yep, let the squirrels have them. . . . However, around here we don't have squirrels this year. Huge crop last year and they migrated. Must have had massive casualties from starvation this past winter.

With as many acorns and hickory nuts I dont see as many squirrels as I thought would be hanging around. I Don't have as many birds as I think should be here. I even hung a bird feeder two weeks ago and it's still full. At the lake it would have been gone in a week and it's about a gallon size feeder

A gallon-sized feeder here would've been empty in a day, usually less, and that's from birds, no squirrels.

I ain't eating acorns, hickory nuts, et al. Look at what happened to Euell Gibbons from eating too many wild nuts etc.!
Just kiddin, he died from an aortic aneurysm due to his Marfan Syndrome.
Still I really do not want to go to all that trouble for a little nut. However, I do love walnuts and I buy raw cashews and roast them myself with seasonings I like. (Just finished a pound about an hour ago)
Maybe if I was not as old experienced in life as I am it might be different, but I will leave the exotic eating of wild thangs to the younger folks. They have more time to recover from a bad spell than I do.

I have only read about certain tribes using acorns, hickory, pecan and other nuts and berries to make a basic flour. Most all acorns have worms for added protein n flavor.

And that's all that are allowed. The sad part is when I shoot the democratic squirrels they taste like Sh&t and you can't eat them. Besides when I look into their face it always reminds me of Pelosi.

tj is on track, acorns can keep you from starving to death, so they taste bad and you have to prepare them before they are eaten. Not a big deal as many wild foods have to be worked before eaten. The whit oak is the best acorn to eat, some people can eat them without leaching first...not me! Anyhow learn to recognize the whit oak as it has less tannin. You must be quick to collect the acorns from the white oak as deer and other wildlife take them quick. Roasting can also make the acorn from the white oak a little less bitter...protein and fat.

So earlier I posted 'feed the squirrels, eat the squirrels' and now I'm thinking why would I try to beat the deer and other wildlife to an acorn that 'has less tanin'. I think my preference would be to get there early and shoot the deer and other wildlife. Feed the deer and wildlife, EAT THE DEER AND THE WILDLIFE NOT THE FREAKIN' NUTS! I guess I'm missing the small picture cause I swear I don't understand eating nuts when game is plentiful.
