I have always wanted to try and do this. So today I went to the hardware store up the street and bought a little piece of #4 Copper ground wire and made a flaking tool with a Maple handle. I found a beer bottle on the roadside on the way back and this is what I ended up with. I know it has a lot of mistakes but for never even attempted this I think it's pretty good.

I like it.
So it is a piece of glass from a broken beer bottle and it flaked under pressure from the copper as the leather flexed under it? Or was the leather just to keep from being cut as you held it?
Did you wrist twist chip it or strike it?
Have you tried the same technique with flint or churt?
Good job!

Thanks everyone. And yep, that was my very first time I ever tried to chip out anything.
That piece is just the bottom out of a brown beer bottle. The leather protects my hands and my leg that I rest the glass on. I both struck it and pressure flaked the shape and edges.
I'm practicing on the glass until I figure out how this really works and then I'll try my hand at some flint stone that I have.
Thanks for the replies and questions, I have no idea what I am dong with this but it's pretty fun so far.

Very well done...are you going to try some with flint? You know if you heat treat flint with fire, it changes the structure and makes the chips come off smaller and sharper and finer...Look forward to seeing more.

Yes my goal is to make proper primitive arrowheads. I have a very nice long bow that I made out of Osage. I also have the arrowshafts, flecthings (from my turkeys), Bowstring, and quiver all made by me. So all I need to complete my native Indian setup is the points. I am using the glass as practice and to teach me how the flaking process works. It is also providing me with the opportunity to build all of my tools. I have much to do. I still need to build the antler percussion tool, a hammerstone/abraber, Ishi stick for flaking and fashion some of the deer leather that I have already brain tanned for proper lap and hand guards.

Maybe when you get it all set up, you can do a video onhow to make a point like this, even with the glass...it is something many of us would find very useful...including me.

That is impressive duckster. Stay with it. I have wanted to get into knapping for years, but seem to find too many reasons not to. I guess having forty other hobbies could be why.
