I agree, good call CL. I can add a little bit here too. How about unscrewing a light switch plate, dropping something down inside the wall tied onto a thread or fishing line, then tying the thread somewhere inconspicuous onto the electrical box before you put the plate back on. Freeze something buried in one of those large (2 gallon?) buckets of ice cream and leave it in the freezer for safekeeping, because who'd go digging into your cheapo rainbow sherbet looking for valuables? If it's papers or cash you want to hide, do a little work on the asphalt shingles on your garage. Tuck papers stowed in heavy duty ziplock bags under some shingles up there, carefully nailed so as to avoid the bags, which should of course be kept as flat as possible.
If you want to be REALLY REALLY clever about hiding a waterproof canister, don't hide it on your property. Instead go carefully dig into the fresh soil of a recent burial in your local cemetery. NOBODY is going to go digging around there looking for your stuff unless someone tips them off, and the recent excavation is excellent cover for your shovel work. Just make damn sure you remember the name of the deceased so you can find your cache later on. And for pete's sake, put the fake grass and wilting flowers back on the grave before you leave.

I just recently discovered a nice little space under my trucks center console. I plan to put a cheap 9mm in there along with a box of ammo. It would take some one thinking outside the box to find it.
Im also a fan of the sacrificial decoy. A cheap but clean shotgun in the open (firing pin out), and a few other shinny things that attract the GCMs may keep them from digging too much deeper.
I will also add that in nearly every burglary case I have seen, the culprit was known to the property owner in some manner. Like a daughter's boyfriend's friend, or even a wayward son, that sort of thing. The offender almost always entered to take something they already knew was there. Most of them too are druggies and arent very sophisticated either. Just be careful who you let in.
