Okay guys, I need help. Yea, yea, all that you're thinking by that statement, put it out of your mind for another time. LoL! I've never been hunting. I need tips on how to hunt a moving target. Suppose it's a bear and it's not facing me, is standing up and I'm hungry so I need to take a side shot. Which part do I aim for? What about other wild animals, what's your best shot you aim for if it's on the run? Do y'all know of great vids which teach this stuff besides y'all great points of doing things? We gals are limited on here, I'm sure we could all use a crash course in hunting so please pour y'all little/big hearts out and give us what y'all know.

Running shots as a general rule should be avoided by the "average" marksman.... That being said- a basic understanding of the anatomy of the creature you are shooting goes a very long way towards explaining where to aim... Personally, I tend to take head shots and back/neck shots on most things.... The weapon being used will also figure into the shot placement quite a bit... Small critters are usually much easier to kill then larger - a shotgun is a great way to take small to medium game. A rifle for medium to large game depending on calibers... Best advice learn what can be hunted in your area... learn the basic anatomy of said critters. Own at least a 28 gauge (410) shotgun and .22 rifle and learn to be accurate with both... You can kill deer size and down with either gun depending on ammunition and range... without destroying the meat. If only one gun will be used a .22 or .22 magnum would be my choice... but educating your self on basic anatomy and learning to be accurate with the gun(s) of your choose is the best advice I can offer. All the rest comes with practice...

I also prefer head or neck shots and other than birds or using a bow, everything I have killed since 16 has been head or neck
but I know where my shot is going to go from experience and I have confidence in myself and the weapon
but I recommend less experienced shooters avoid running shots and shoot to break the shoulder

Just by watching hunting and outdoor programming I think you actually aim a little different on a bear due to the deceptive nature of it's silhouette. As to the should I shoot or wait, well honestly I would rather not shoot a bear simply because of the lack of proper preservation of the meat and how to properly handle the hide.

Okay I'm confused, what do you mean by it's "deceptive nature of it's silhouette"?

The hair and fat makes it appear the proper shot is 8 to 10 inches lower than where the vitals are

Anything belt fed with tracers for running bears. It took me a little while Okie but I figured out what you meant. Oh yea, my excuse is I just woke up. Right now it's coffee, not the punch bowl, that's for later. Heck who messes around with a punch bowl anyway, just pass the bottle around.
