Okay guys, sorry for the delay. As I promised, I dove into my walk in closet and I was shocked on how of a survival equipment pack rat I have become. I found miscellaneous survival things that I had no idea I had.
Anyways, I purchased several boxes of MREs from the Epicenter.com in 2004 according to the packing label on the box. I opened an MRE pack and decided to do a taste test on the crackers and I was surprised that they were still edible. I tasted the cookie that came with the kit and that was just horrible.....tasted like some type of chemical. The kit came with macaroni and cheese pack which I used with the heater.
I added the water to the packet with the heater and macaroni with cheese inside. The packet got hot in about 40 seconds and after a minute I had to place the packet down because it got real hot. It was hot for about 20 minutes and still warm 35 minutes later. The macaroni and cheese packet that I was heating was hot. However, did not want to do a taste test the macaroni & cheese cause the MRE was so old and I just did not want to have an a$$ blow out for days or worse.
So, my question is.....do I throw away the MREs and keep the heaters or can you eat the MREs in a worse case scenario ?

Thanks for the review Orly. I've read several answers to your question of eating old MREs on the internet. Some have eaten older and say the taste has mellowed over the years but they are still edible. Of course they don't come back and tell us if they got sick on what they ate. Then again just maybe they can't. I kept the crackers, breads, cakes and other snacks. My chickens eat them! I also kept the seasoning packets to use.

which would you eat first?
a year old MRE or a dead cat?
I guess it would depend on how hungry you get
I'd go with the live cats supplemented by the MRE's until they were gone (and we were glad to get them)
PS CATS is just a placeholder, think fish or cow or dog if cat bothers you

Thanks woodys for that info. I also did a search on eating old MREs and pretty much came up with the same. I guess when there is nothing to eat everything taste great....I just hope it don't come to that.
