We decided NOT to go to South Carolina next week. I didn't want to take a hotel room away from someone that needed it. We will be heading to Great Smokies on a more direct route. I heard that the first casualty in the US was someone that had a heart attack and emergency staff couldn't get to them. That is something that people don't think about. You have a medical emergency and the usual emergency help is not there. It could be a heart attack or a cut and serious bleeding. Everyone stay safe. You are so right. Many people don't evacuate for the inconvenience. But many don't think of the what ifs, especially medical emergencies.

11 dead in NC, WHF? Its not like they didn't know it was coming, people can be so stupid Also Hilton Head was really wasted, 40k live on the island and most left, but the marinas and houses and boats are wasted 26 total killed in the US

If they're southern bombs they'll be deemed racist and destroyed.
Has anyone heard from folks on the coast? Crash? Lawdog?

Not a word from either one as far as I know. What with all the power outages, there's not much we can expect for the next day or two. I would use this opportunity to admonish everyone to add backup cellphone battery chargers to your preps, but that won't do much good if the towers are down, right?
Speaking of cellphone chargers, didn't I see something about how to make a solar powered one? I'm going to have to do some rooting around, see what I can find.

You know he is part of the wilderness site. :0 We are all just glad to know that he is OK. He will tell his story no doubt when he comes back here. I just didn't want people fretting.

I bet it's a scary story, too. My heart goes out to everyone affected by Matthew and I wish I could help more. Now if we could find out how Lawdog made it thru I'd be able to rest easier. Are there any other members in that area? Does anyone know? Our profiles aren't much help and I've already checked the emergency notification list to no avail.

Woohoo! Power returned late yesterday. Finally got cable back just now! Thank goodness for generators and a library of movies. We didn't loose any food and have plenty of camping gear to cook on. No way I was missing my morning coffee! We did loose several sections of fence, a few pieces of vinyl siding, large tree limbs everywhere, even a few sections of our stone wall was blown over. Power surges did knock out a few things that either couldn't be, or wasn't plugged into a surge protector. I've never seen the water so high before...ever! Most importantly, we're all okay. Praying the same for all other affected in Matthews path.
For us, this was worse than Hugo, and we lived at the beach then!

It's not pleasant when it's off too long for sure. But sounds like you were prepared and rode it out! Good on ya and your family. Jimmy
