Scientists are warning that 2018 could be a year of increased seismic activity. They believe that a notable decrease in the earth’s rotation could create seismic unrest along earthquake-prone faults.

Why is the west coast shaking so violently? According to the latest data from Earthquake Track, there have been 698 earthquakes in California within the past 30 days.

Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0. If there is a large earthquake, however, the aftershock sequence will produce many more earthquakes of all magnitudes for many months.

698 quakes is 6.98% of their average total per year. 30 days is ~8.22% of the year.
If anything, there has been a lower percentage (-17.4%) drop.
