Posted on May 31, 2019 by Stacy Malkan Key Facts About Diet Soda Chemical Dozens of studies have linked aspartame — the world’s most widely used artificial sweetener — to serious health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, seizures, stroke and dementia, as well as negative effects such as intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, headaches and migraines. Evidence also links aspartame to weight gain, increased appetite and obesity-related diseases. See our fact sheet: Diet Soda Chemical Tied to Weight Gain. Evidence linking aspartame to weight gain raises questions about the legality of marketing aspartame-containing products as “diet” drinks or weight loss products. In April 2015, US Right to Know petitioned the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the marketing and advertising practices of “diet” products that contain aspartame. See FTC response and FDA response. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said aspartame is “safe for the general population under certain conditions.” The agency first approved aspartame for some uses in 1981. Many scientists, then and now, have said the approval was based on suspect data and should be reconsidered. What is Aspartame? Aspartame is the world’s most widely used artificial sweetener. It is also marketed as NutraSweet, Equal, Sugar Twin and AminoSweet. More Here; usrtk.org/sweeteners/aspartame_health_risks/

Never really saw it growing up. 1) no one in the house liked the taste of diet soda 2) at least two family members were/are allergic to it.

Right from the start I became suspicious of it and didn't buy anything with it in and then banned it from my house. To this day I don't know why, I was just adamant about it.

It's utterly evil stuff, and that's without any of the studies.
My first experience was when another family member who was diabetic routinely consumed a"diet" beverage at dinner. I drank a glassful and wondered why I was in rather sudden need of some Kaopectate (which is all but unavailable nowadays). I don't recall who made a drugstore run, but in a few days, I was back to normal. I don't remember the second exposure but I was able to connect the same beverage to the result. It took another few days to feel safe without a bathroom in sight. Having dealt with food allergies, I began reading labels and concluded aspartame was sheer poison. Unfortunately the diabetic family member had no problem with it and continued to consume it and every other diet sweetener out there.
#2 son had issues with it as a toddler. Some dim bulb served the same beverage to all the kids in his daycare class. The original location had had a fire caused by a bird's nest igniting, so the kids were cared for in other locations with certain parents contributing snacks and beverages for all. With no diabetic kids in the group, this person decided to feed the kids a diet drink. Anyway, #2 son, who spent each weekend getting over diarrhea, returned on Monday morning, only to have it again by Monday afternoon when I was admonished to keep him home since he obviously had "a stomach virus". When I happened to see the beverage in question, I finally understood what had happened and made certain he consumed nothing contributed by anyone else.
Later in life, my own intolerance for the stuff was augmented by a complete intolerance for the alcohol sugars such as sorbitol and mannitol (those are the only names that pop into my head right now but I know there are more. Consuming any of these, even in minute quantities, can disrupt my life for a week before I'm back to normal. It seems that those substances that my body strongly dislikes completely disrupt my digestion, make me itch ferociously, or, in the case of codeine, act as a very quick emetic.

I'm diabetic, diet A&W is about all but water that I have left to drink, it has Aspartame as it's 4th ingredient, I don't like lt's taste, but I dislike it less than most other diet drinks, so I drink it, I'm over 65, have heart issues and am diabetic, so if covid 19 doesn't get me, I'm less worried about Aspartame killing me. My Grand Mother was 94, my Mother is 85, my Father was 80, I'm 67, I have a ways to go yet, and I'm not going to spend any of it worrying about covid or Aspartame.

I think because I eat a lot of bacon that counteracts any aspartame in my system. I could be wrong but I’m a year older than you so obviously I’m much, much wiser. LOL

I would eat more bacon if my wife mate would let me, but someone lied to her and said, bacon was bad, and she restricts my intake, not fair, totally wrong minded, I only have so much time left, and I should get to eat all the bacon I can/want.

It's going to be 100F today. Good thing I have lots of BACON in the freezer!
I generally don't eat hamburgers when eating out, but I couldn't resist when I was offered one that was 50% ground top sirloin and 50% ground Wrights hickory smoked BACON. It was killer good smothered in mushrooms/onions that were sauteed in butter.

I detest my son's allergy to pork; otherwise I'd happily be feeding him bacon. Turkey bacon's better than none at all, but it's not the same.

The only damn thing that would help so called turkey bacon is being fried in real bacon grease! You sincerely have my sympathy.... Though I must ask... Does he have an allergy to pork or one of the additives to it - MSG? .... just a question to consider...

Pork itself. He's got eight food allergies altogether and I suspect environmental allergies too (despite being born in LA he does not carry any southern acclimation I've gained).
Wheat Soy Egg whites Beef Pork Peanuts Powdered/dry milk Oranges
Some of these are easy enough to avoid, but others can be difficult to find in the ingredients list.
