I was thinking about this the other day and I was reminded of what was spray painted on the doors after Katrina. I think if the house was boarded up (except for the back door escape) on the front, I'd spray paint that 3 dead from botchulism or some such disease might would prevent some people from coming close. Maybe even print up an official looking sign to put out by the road (like from the sheriff's or public health dept) saying that deaths had occurred from a contagious disease. excellent idea!

There are no "interior" rooms in our house. Every room has at least one window, even the basement. There are no walk-in closets either. This was a concern for us several times when thunderstorms threatened to spawn tornadoes. We have a walk in closet for tornadoes, etc. but we designated another room as our live in room for emergencies. I'm thinking more emergencies like power outages, shelter in place (chem plant release, etc.) where it's not as important to remain un-seen. I have plywood cut out to cover the window (it has only one) and plastic sheeting and duct tape in the room's closet. It also has our BOB's. I think something similar could be done if the goal was to be unnoticed. I purchased several relatively cheap motion detectors to place around the house to let me know if something or someone is close by.

I like the idea of a false sign or posting. But I wonder if the sign would draw the guard force or FEMA or CERT to evacuate and quarantine you. You might end up needing to tell so many people you were really ok that the ruse goes bust. Still I like the idea.

I would think that most people would think it was FEMA/CERT/Law Enforcement that put the sign up. I would want it to look like they had already been there, spray painted the number of dead and skull and crossbones on the plywood nobody would report it. Although you make a good point that someone might want them to burn the house for safety reasons.. THAT wouldn't work out too good... lol. Then the jig would be up..

I do not buy ANYTHING in areosol cans.
I do not use paper or plastic plates, utinsels and such.
I don't use chemicals on my place...I worry about it leaching into my well.
If I get stuff in glass jars, I reuse them for canning or storing dried goods and such in, making candles for gifts or for emergency use and such.
The few canned goods I get, the cans are recycled if not used in some manner. If SHTF, they would get used.
I make compost, so that gets rid of a lot of organic materials like paper and such.
Food left overs are divided up between chickens, guineas, pig, barn cats and Jims dogs (or mine when I get another one).
Anything not reused or recycled is burnable only and is taken to the burn barrel in the back yard and set afire about once a month, as I don't produce much garbage at all. This tends to be plastic for the most part...cereal bags, toilet paper and such.
Any cardboard boxes are cut into pieces and placed in a bin to be used in the winter time along with kindling to start fires in the wood stove.
I use an old news paper roller with a water trough to tightly roll wet newspaper into logs and let set to dry. These make great logs for throwing on a fire, just don't make them the only thing you burn or you will have a massive flew fire on your hands!!
I practice a lot of ways to keep from having an excess of garbage. But then it's easy when I am the only one here.
