Nice job I wish more of us would start making the things we need. Not only will it last longer but you have the pride of making it your self

Well done on the saw. Why did you return the swage tool? Was it broken? It wasn't broken. I can't afford the tool. It was $30 and very job specific.

I finished it today. Carved it down a bit to give it more of an antique, “hand-hewn” look. Then I coated it with spar-urethane and called it good… That looks so good you could start selling em...

Well, here’s how far I made it before the log I was sawing rolled off its support and snapped my blade in half. I’m really not that impressed with the thickness or quality of the blades offered in the hardware store, but there’s not much I can do about it other than buying a whole bunch of spares…

Did a Google on bow saw blades and found these. Expensive! but made in Germany. Probably outlast a dozen of the cheaper ones. Would just have to try one and see. www.traditionalwoodworker.com/products.asp?dept=650Price would make you cringe if you broke one though!!

I said I would post a picture of the old bow saw I have so here you go... will be three in all... note the handle is a bit longer on one side. I am not sure where the tightening mechanism came from but I am think it was off of an old store bought and was used when this was made....The blade is a full 1.5 inches......and still sharp as heck..... That is a piece of raw hide that was put on the off side of the handle to help protect the wood from the potential rubbing of the tightening mechanism while sawing. Attachments:
