Wow! a lot of good info. One of the HVAC guys at work recommended a temperature alarm be put in my old freezer. That would give me some warning that it had quit. Dink, how thick cardboard did you use? I would think it would have to be pretty thick. Missasip, where do you even get milk cartons these days? Sorry, they are the storage baskets you can buy in WM, dollar stores, etc. They come in different colors and I think a couple of different sizes. They look just like old milk cartons. They work great. Look thru the storage items and you might find something that works better for you. Jimmy

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought a Haier 5.0 cu. ft. chest freezer from HHGreg. So far we have been pleased with it. The wife is happy to get that extra space.
thanks for your info.

Durn! We just had a 20 upright delivered Friday. That is what the wife wanted? Hope it works out. I may get another chest type for the meat and use the other for veggy stuff. I got two generators so maybe I can keep em cold in an emergency. If we don't get rain soon there won't be any deer or veggies to put in it.

I have been looking at them. Doesn't seem like much difference between them. I plan to get the one that is the best work bench height.
We are going to a smaller refrigerator and chest freezer instead of a combo.

I have found the older chest freezers that are NOT self defrosting seem to use less energy and if the power goes out, they seem to stay frozen longer. And if you defrost it yourself you can chunk the ice off and use it during the heat of summer in animal waterers to keep them cooler longer.
A friend down the road has offered me a BIG older chest freezer along with several 90# fattened lambs. I am seriously considering this offer since my older freezer burned up and as of right now the 2 little ones are full and are self defrosting. And if I get more than 1 deer come deer season, I won't have room. I am thonking let Steven tale one of the small ones and keep the other small one in the kitchen and the big one in the basement.
Gotta get the new rootcellar done and get electricity in it so I can keep a freezer out there!!

the wife already has the new 5 cubic foot freezer almost full. SIGH. We should have gotten the bigger one.
I didn't foresee the wife getting on-board all of a sudden.

We inherited a huge chest freezer when we bought this house. Stocked wih forty packs of bologna frozen corn deer meat and a bunch of other stuff. Was all outdated and burnt so its now dog food in a pinch. It holds a ton and as mentioned stays cold even when our power was out for a week thanks to the numerous three litre bottles across the top of the food. Wish we had one or two more for use on our bol
