Being raised on the farm and constantly admonished growing up not to waste, it's tough to see that happen. I understand why companies don't want their products being given away and then sold by someone else like some sort of scam but it still is tough to know that goes on.

For coffee cans "If you drink coffee or just want some to store" look at the store brands. Carnival Foods have Best Buy, and Always Save in cans. I have not seen or heard of any "FREEGANS" in this area, but they could be. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeganism

For coffee cans, we've started drinking Wallyworld's GV coffee, pretty good too! Of course, we didn't start drinking it for the cans but, it's got the best price around with good flavor too.

All condiments that pathwinder14 mentioned: salt, pepper, sugar+ mayo, mustard, pickle relish, ketchup, marmalade... EVEN matches could be found in CASINOs. +1 and you don't feel quite as guilty taking more than your fair share from a casino....

maybe obvious but:
pennies: on the ground in every city and few people bother to pick them up
cardboard: you can make firestarters
tinder & kindling: easy to gather on walks around your property or neighborhood. do this for a few minutes a day and you'll have a HUGE pile soon enough...
Empty soda and juice jugs: cleanse and store water
Classico Brand Pasta sauce: free canning jar when you are done
food tubs like for cottage cheese, dips etc: can be used as tupperware
I guess the last few are really just recycling ideas....but they work too!

around here you can get lumber from the small mills that did not meet what they want to sale we get it all the time and cut the bad part off we just added 8x20 to the cabin with it most the time you get 8 to 10 feet some times 20 feet of bored It is just cedar but works great and I like working with yellow cedar a lot of it is 2 1/2 x6 or 8 they burn off so much of it every month it would take me three years to burn it for fire wood

You're right karatediver. We used to be able to buy items that had been 0'd out for .99. Better to get something than nothing but, then that was stopped. Anything that couldn't be sent back for credit was brought to me to be shredded and put in the dumpster. Since I was the LP manager, I guess I was the only one they trusted to do the job. This just sounds crazy to me. Once something is thrown away, is it not then considered public property? Cant you drive around on trash day and take items from peoples trash pile? Pretty sure that is leagal. My point is, once all that merchandise from those stores is in the dumpstr, it is fair game is it not? Maybe Im way off here....

Another important item to be had at casinos are the individually wrapped hand cleaners and some casinos give away decks of cards they no longer will use after they have canceled them.
