actually......... I have a good bit of experience with this. I have done it at least 4 times...Hence the reason you never catch me ANYWHERE with out a flashlight First 2 times were hard but much easier the more you do it.....

I know it's hard, that's why I always start a fire before it gets dark. One thing you can't do after dark is see if the area is a good place to build a fire in the first place. Truth is you can't stop anywhere and just get a fire going, even with light it can take time to find the right place to make a fire.

Might just have to try this tonight. You headed to the woods? Well that was a lot harder than i thought it would be. I used a magnesium fire starter . It is partly cloudy tonight here. I stumbled around the woods behind the house till I found a cedar to take tender off of. I could of use the fresh fall leaves on the ground but that would be way to easy. After finding the tender I looked for fire wood. I lucked up and found a lot of dead fall that came out of an old oak after sandy went up the coast and we got a lot of strong wind gust. Got my tender in a nest, got my small sticks ready shaved off some mag. into a dry leaf and dumped it into the nest, put a spark to it and poof fire. got it built up and had a nice little fire. For me the hardest part was getting the mag. into the leaf. All of this was done with zero light. And to beat it all I forgot my phone so I didn't get any pics, sorry. I will try it again soon and take a few pics.

Thanks for sharing, I don't mess with mag bars just to hard to get the shavings in a pile with light to see. Hats off to you for doing this in the dark , I doubt I could have done this with a mag bar, i would just use the fire steel. Great job

Great job I started out the door with a book of paper matches but then I thought what would be harder to start a fire with ? A mag bar just popped in my mind. You should do one with a fire bow in the dark OT ;D. I am still working on my bow drill skills or I would try it .

I think the hard part of starting a fire at night in a strange place. Would be finding all three stages of material for fire. If a person is lucky enough to find tinder then kindling then fuel and is able to stack it correctly. Then by all means use the easiest lighting method you have. You took it one step further, that's what a person needs to do to stay ahead of the curve

I always have a tinder bundle and twigs in a plastic bag in my BOB or pack so that all I have to do when I get to my camp site all I have to do is fnd some small limbs or wood and then gather some larger stuff. I only use the tinder in my pack if it is too dark or wet to get a fire started easily otherwise I gather everything at or near the camp site. If I use my little tinder bundle then I make another to put in my pack before I move on in case I need it again. Often if I see something that looks like it would be good for starting a fire as I am hiking I will gather it and stick it in a pocket for use when I make camp.

I have been in the woods behind the house so much I can almost tell you were every tree is .

I always have a tinder bundle and twigs in a plastic bag in my BOB or pack... Same here. I replace it as I go.
