Happy days ;D I did it Made fire with the pump drill. Not as easy as I had hoped. It took me three tries and had to change the spindle once. This is not a magic way of making fire, you still must learn how to use it. At first I went to fast and pushed down to hard, all I got was lumpy dust. Next try i let up on the pressure and the dust was brown but no coal. Try three, I changed out the spindle, Started out slow and let the pump drill do the work ;D One tip, when using the pump drill and it seems to slow down, not spinning like it should. Then take the weight off the pump board as it winds back up. This will most likely happen as your arms get tired. Anyone out there that can't do a bow drill, give the pump drill a try. Just don't be fooled, you still have to work at it. If you need help I would be more then willing to help....Thanks for watching

Thats neat OT. I never knew of a pump drill till you posted about one. Can you give a plan of how you built it? You sure sounded like you were tickled to death in video.

Once you get the idea of how it works you should have no problem making one.

That looks pretty easy. It is easy to make and with some practice not to bad to use.

Yea I bumped this thread too. I was going back through your older threads searching specifically for this one and rewatched many others along the way. Enjoyed them just as much as the first time I watched them. I have a question in regards to the drill pump which I like very much as a fire starter People carry bow drill kits in their back packs. I would like to have a drill pump made on a smaller scale as this one is nicely put together only the dowel is rather long and wouldn't fit in a back pack. I understand a shorter dowel would mean pumping more times to keep it going, but do you think I'd achieve the desired effect to get a coal by making the entire drill smaller to fit my back pack?

I'm sure there is a limit to how short it can be.Let me work on it and see how much i can cut off and still be workable

It just reminds me of the old button on a string we'd play with as kids, you may remember those. To a certain extent no matter the length of the string, you could still flip the button on it and get the button spinning on it.

No worry i should be able to work it out without messing with the one I have.
