Bummer dude, Next time take a saw and check the branches at the lowest part of the tree. You will find fatwood there also. Once you cut the branch off look at the cut end and see if it's a shiny red color and it will feel heavy and tacky to the touch.

Do either of you have a pic of fatwood still in/on the tree? I have acres and acres surrounding my house but do not fully know what I am looking for.

Many times you can't tell if it's fatwood till you cut into the tree. The best places to look are the stumps of broken pine trees and where branches connect to the tree. rarely does fatwood show it'self on the outside of the tree. Do you know what heartwood is ? this is where you will most likely find fatwood...but not always. Take your saw and cut off some branches from dead trees, look at the cut end. Does it feel sticky, is it a darker color then the outer wood. Once you learn what it looks like and where you will most likely find it, you will have no problem finding it ever again.

OT summed it up, I will be going back out this coming weekend to get some. But with my saw, just wanted to try out the old ax . I will take some pic as I go about collecting it unless someone else has some already.

And the smell will knock you down - you won't forget it. To me, it smells kind of like turpentine. Just hold a match to it and you will see that it catches immediately, burns quickly and produces a distinctive black smoke.
I have literally tons of it surrounding me because of my dieing forest, so I will grab some pictures for you tomorrow. Every time I fell a big pine that has died, but has not dried out yet - the smell makes me think that the chain saw is going to ignite the wood.
Marc
Edit to add: "Not" dried out.

The closest substantial tree line is about 100 meters away. I was fully intending on get out into the woods this last week as I was off school, but life got in the way. Hopefully after finals are done in a few weeks I can get out and explore. I am still trying to figure out who actually owns the woods so we can discuss some of my ideas. Thanks for the info.

See if your county has a GIS mapping on there website. It will say who owns the land.
Try a search like county-name state gis

Found the site but you must subscribe to the site and it is after hours. I might run by the assessors office and see if they have a way for me to look it up, just a one time deal. Thanks again for the info.
