If no one knows the answer I might load a few up and see what happens. I have never really investigated the precise differences. Can't be that much?! ;D Edit so you guys could make sense of what I was asking!

what calibers are you refering to? Some pistols are chambered for rifle rounds. Careful with .22, they come in various lengths. .22 long will not fit in a .22 short for example.

I was terrible at describing what I meant. I was referring to small pistol primers/small rifle primers for reloading.

Sometimes I ask questions without doing a lick of research.
AFter a simple google search, it appears that in a SHTF scenario it may work, pistol/rifle primers have different height measurements evidently along with powder charge. Rifle being larger. By a small margin, but evidently it is noticeable. There are many comments and articles about this issue, and most say that it can work, but is not a reliable interchange that should be done unless completely a last resort.

I remember my dad always had seperate primers for small rifle and pistol rounds.

If I am not mistaken, the cup thickness is slightly off between the two, as well as positioning of the anvil.

If I am not mistaken, the cup thickness is slightly off between the two, as well as positioning of the anvil. I did just enough research to understand it is a no go. I believe the issue is that while doable one of the two are slightly taller and even when fully seated gases can escape out of the back of the case where the primer sits. Some of the SP primers are supposedly not strong enough in charge to ignite the rifle cartridges properly.

I try to stay with factory recommendation when ever possible....SHTF, different story.
