So, I have been putting off getting my CCP for some time because I don't really go anywhere. I work where I live and only rarely venture out. A bit of a recluse I suppose.
Anyway I recently applied for and recieved my CCP. Now I need to get a different hand gun (mine are a bit too big)
My questions are what gun do you recommend that is small. easy to conceal, packs enough punch and is less than $400? If that's even possible. And secondly what kind of holster do you recommend?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think your biggest hurdle might be the $400 and below but it all depends on what you like. I am pretty sure you could get a revoler for that price or under if that's something you'd want. You should be able to find a decent 9mm for a little more. I've been scoping out the gun shops lately to keep an eye out for something i want. Those are the prices I'm seeing.

Well...before I got rid of mine in preparation of the upcoming ban, I would carry a Kel Tec PF9 if I wanted something very concealable. I have no issues with a 9mm JHP for defense if I need it, and a 17oz gun (when loaded 7+1) can come with me anywhere. I have heard some people had issues with it, but I never did. If I remember correctly it was about $250 back then. I liked it over the Ruger LC9 basically because it weighed less, it cost less, and it had no safety other than the 7lb DAO trigger. If it doesn't float your boat I would say the Ruger LC9 is a good alternative...definitely a better fit and finish. You can also choose a different caliber.
For a little more money you can pick up a SW Shield or Springer XDs in 9mm also. If you want smaller, the LCP or KT P3AT in 380 are hard to beat. The shield is also in 40SW and you can get the XDs in 45acp (sweet piece that springer, heavier and only 5+1, but great sights, decent trigger, and good feel for a small 45).
If you want a revolver, I would tell you to look at a Ruger LCR in 38 spl or 357. They should be around $400 or if you want a little cheaper look at the Charter Arms Revolvers.
If you want to carry shoulder...I'd recommend a Galco Classic Lite. If IWB or Pocket...I won't lie, I had great luck with Uncle Mikes holsters...for $14, its hard to beat. otherwise, tons of great holsters out there.
Hope that helps at all.

Haha, amazingly I forgot Glock. They are thicker for sure. And a little more than 400 new, and even used nowadays. But a glock 26 or 30 are great pieces if you don't mind that. And if you're used to shooting glocks, battery of arms is the same. Lots of good 1911 styles too, but most of them are a lot more money, and a lot more weight. You can probably get a Rock Island compact 1911 for around $400. I know people that love them. I have no experience with RI though.

Bulgarian Makarov 9x18, yes a strange round, ammo can be found for it. weapon can be changed to a standard 380 with just a bbl change I believe. The 9x18 mak. round is larger ((.364)) then the 9mm parabellum (((.358)) I think thats what the 9 mm para mics out at. All up with the conversion should be less then $450.00 A hard hitting 9mm with the recoil of a 380. and ccw comfortable The other I would recommend would be a Star BM in 9mm para. small compact and a Colt Commander clone, might be more then 400$ now.

Ruger LCP .380. Kel-tec P3AT
Skip the 9 and go to .40. Glock 27 for a step up in stopping power.
Those were my choices.

My son in law gave me a Model 22 Glock .40 cal, 15 shot magazine, nice pistol easy to maintain, and from what I'm told take abuse and still fire and in a SHTF senario I don't want a high maintenence firearm. Simple is better. I know you mentioned small but this is moderate size. Ammos is also resonable $20.00 a box of 50 same I paid before things went to high $ and still paying the same.

I had the Keltec PF9 also. It was a good gun. I bought it for well under $400. I think like $250. I just got sold it the other day to help pay for a Springfield XDs 9mm when they come out. wanted something to compliment my XD9.

Model S&W SD9 VE - 16+1 capacity / Blackhawk CQC holster
Paid a shade over $300 out the door at my LGS. It's my edc and the holster w/paddle attachment is very comfortable, even in the car. Small being a relative term I find this gun, for me, is perfect. But I am 6'5" @240lbs so I can just about hide an 870 pump behind my arm, if I don't bend my elbow. ;D

Wow, I should have known there would be a lot of info coming in on this thread. Thanks so much everyone. I will have to take some time and research all the options ya'll put out there. I may be able to talk DW into paying a bit more than that, but there's no guarantees Thanks again everyone for the advice. I'll let you know what I decide on when the time comes. I have a couple months still before purchase time so if you think of anything else feel free to share. Thanks again, mark

Wear a waist pack and carry a full size weapon with no problems at all.

A waist pack? Is that like what I call a "fanny pack?" I have one but I would have to get a bigger one to fit a full sized gun in it. But that's a thought. Could put a lot of other potentially usefull stuff in it too. Thanks for the advice crash.

My current love affair is the Ruger LC9. I carried the different 380's the last five years, but wanted something a little more potent, and dependable. The Ruger has proven to do very well. No malfunctions at all, 7+1, and still only a tiny bit larger than my Keltec and Ruger 380's. I paid $350 for it, then made my own inside the waistband holster. So far, Luv'in it. I have Glock 19, and 23's but they are a tad too large for some places.

I use a "inside the pants" type holster and love it.
If I were still buying guns I would +1 on the .40 over 9MM for a CCW

You've received alot of good input here MM, I would only like to state that I have always believed in the importance of shooting what "fits" well in the hand. Whatever you choose, it should fit you well and be a good match. Just my $.02
