Recommend looking at the Taurus 709 Slim. Cost was around $350. I've put several hundred rounds through it with no issues. I also shot a friends Taurus 111 and thought it fit my hand better. It's only about 1/8" wider and has a 12 round mag.

There is NO one size fits all answer, but some great advice has already been given. When talking about personal concealed carry, I think that it breaks down to 4 simple rules. Rule 1) A person who has a "comfortable gun that fits them" is far more effective with 3 rounds than another person with 17 rounds that can't effectively use the weapon to stay on target. Rule 2) Shot placement trumps all - including caliber, load and bullet type. We've all seen the stat's about .22 LR being really lethal. If you can put the shot where it needs to go............. Rule 3) Most uses of compact "get off me" guns are at very close range, and end in 3.5 to 4.1 shots fired as a national average. Rule 4) Size, weight and comfort WILL dictate whether you leave it home sometimes - and you can figure out if that's important! Sometimes simple is better. My choice for myself, my wife and daughters: I've never heard anyone claim that the .357 mag was weak. BUT - I'm NOT saying it's the right gun for everyone! My wife is deadly with hers. If you feel that you can live with 5 rounds, you may want to consider a super simple, reliable, powerful pocket revolver. Sure, we would all love to own something that never misses and never runs out of ammo, but...... See rule 1 !!!!!! Marc

You guys are keeping me busy watching reviews. Great. Next step is to go to every gun shop in the area and handle as many CC models as possible. Thanks all.

When I carry I have a Colt light weight officer's model in a nylon shoulder model or a Taurus in a inside pants holster, both in 45. I like the shoulder job the best, but need jacket to cover it.
Just a thought, you might want to check out any pawn shops in your area for some deals.
