The kids DD, SIL, GS in Louisiana have bought into the back to the land self-sufficiency idea. So as part of this they decided to raise chickens. Although I question their economics.....I am supporting their effort, if for no other reason than activity for the GS, who's gonna be 3 in Aug. Generally when one of the SIL's project comes up, I get a "Daaaaad" from DD as the SIL talks a good game, but leaves a bit to be desired in the ability and follow thru department. As I can't seem to get away fro Wisconsin for a lot of reasons this winter, I found a possible solution for their coop. www.agrisupply.com/chicken-coop-chicken-house-hen-house-henhouse/p/76953/&sid=&eid=/I don't think I can come up with the materials for that price, as I would have to start from scratch, SIL has not mastered the "magic materials pile" that I normally draw from in building projects. The thought of hauling materials 1000 miles doesn't appeal to me. I order one up this morning, having the "kit" shipped to them and said , Happy Birthday, Stephen....in May. We will see how this plays out.....LOL

Now ya done it. I've been needing to rebuild my chicken coop, but instead I just might buy one of these!! I could get this and install new chicks in it, and let the hens I have now just live out their lives in the old coop. (No. Do not suggest that I slaugh... sla... ki... nope. Not gonna go it to a creature that trusts me and comes running when it sees me. Not open for discussion.) Thanks for the post, Hunter63! Couldn't have come at a better time. I bookmarked the site.

FYI I got a catalog in the mail, from these guys......How? don't know? But..... I called DD and SIL, and had them look it up before I spent the bucks.... SIL uses this company all the time for his mower business, for supplies....so he knows them, and like them.

Wow. I went to order the $239 one and the shipping would be over $150!!!!!!!!!!! AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. That is kinda sticker shocky......but when you look at the big picture, not so bad. In the past my method of building a project was to design it up, eithe informal or drawing, to get and idea of materials.....go out to the material pile, then start modifing the design to fit what I had. Several project were built from scratch using all purchased material....just a trip to the lumber yard will give you a eye-opening experiance. My Boat/tractor shed, cost me $500 bucks for gravel and leveling....and I hauled it....hadn't even thought about the lumber, and steel roofing, yet. Looked at the one I bought, @$100 buck shipping and realized I couldn't buy the materials, load it in my trailer, haul it 1000 miles....for a $100 bucks. Even if I bought it there in La. the fuel for me to get there from here is gonna be $300 bucks. You get what you pay for, and for me it made sense....not for everyone.

Wow, Walmart does sale everything and anything...lol Like the choice on the pen Ccmama. I noticed that it's for 3 chickens...are you planning to have 2 hens, and a rooster or just all hens for eggs...just wondering. You have probably also extend the chicken run with some wood and wire....maybe even be able to add more chickens. Thanks for sharing darling. Btw, would like to see pics once is all set up....please

I said I ordered the Cape Cod, but made a mistake on the name, it was the Prairie Home I got. No roosters, all hens for eggs. I've had roos before and they are a pain in the tail, crowing at all hours of the day and night. OHN!! Going to get some White Rock pullets and raise them in this new home. I'm SO excited!! FREE SHIPPING!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, and it's going to be delivered directly to my house... not the local WalMart!!

Just try to stop me from posting all kinds of photos..! LOL I have achieved two major goals here lately. One, I have lost 40 (forty) pounds since last summer, I have cleaned out our garage and am in the process of organizing it... it was SO BAD, you just have no idea... and now the new coop for the backyard. SO HAPPY!

Oh wow, that's a really nice one too...I know what you mean about roosters. I have a neigbor that had some hens and a rooster....btw, these homes down here are built right next to each other...anyways, that rooster drove in insane early in the morning and late evening....at times I wanted to just jump the fence and take the rooster out. Anyways, I guess the owner was clueless on raising them and they all ended up dying.
