I've got a chance to buy a Marlin 336 30-30, made in 1951.
I've had newer 336's before, but haven't dealt with any made in the 50's. Do y'all know of any problems with these?
I do know that when the current owner bought it the firing pin was broken, he had it replaced by a gunsmith. Who claimed he thought is hadn't been shot much at all. (I haven't physically seen the gun yet).
I've been doing some internet searches, but you guys are usually the best for questions.
Thanks for any help.

Not sure of the price, but if it is reasonable, I would grab it. Some times the older firing pins did break on all guns because of the metal used was too hard and folks played with them snapping them without the pin be supported by an empty case. I have a couple that had pin issues but after replacement with modern ones had no problems. Hope that helps a little.

There was some heat treat issues with the gun as I recall. One of them was the firing pin. I believe the other was the hammer spring. On the upside, the rifle was noted for higher than average accuracy as compared to it's counterparts of the day. I believe I'd buy it based on that, and with it, get a new firing pin, and hammer spring to be sure.

If I found one at a decent price, I would prefer older than newer. What's he asking?

Great to see that old add - I love it!
Actually, compared to so many other things today's price isn't bad at around $350 to $375 new. Compare that to cars, houses, food items, clothes and incomes in 1956.
I'm betting that they were built better then, but........

Actually that's not really a good price compared to today's price considering inflation: Quote> What cost $72.95 in 1958 would cost $571.26 in 2012. Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2012 and 1958, they would cost you $72.95 and $9.26 respectively <Quote Kinda a cool site. www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgiWould believe a Mosin Nagant for $10 bucks? As a young man with a paper route, I lusted after a winchester model 1894 30-30 atb the hardware store, at about the same price. As the weekly paper then was 40 cents, w/Sunday, 60 cents....$75 buck seems a lotof money. Scared me for life....and still don't have one......LOL
