WEnt to the gun show at the KCI Expo in KC yesterday. NOWHERE near the people that has normally been there. And AR prices have come WAY down. $899 for Bushmaster and DPMS. Of course they go as high as you want to pay, but I thought it was a good sign. PMAGS were alot cheaper too,$20. Ammo for everything, EXCEPT 40 cal. . I just got started reloading about a month ago (I know, a little late) and have everything but 40 cal reloading dies. Everybody there told me good luck finding them. SO I picked up a few other things and headed to Cabelas since its @15 miles away. Went to check out there reloading supplies just to see what they didn't have, and HOLY CRAP!! 2 sets of 40 reloading dies!!!!!! Snatched one up and went around to see there other stuff. Talked to an employee there and he said they've had ARs for 3 weeks now. He said it seems like the run on them has died down for now. Ammo was still gone there, but the massive lines in the gun dept wasn't there. Now I'm sitting in the basement finally getting to reload the 2300+ rounds of 40 brass I have been buying every chance I got.

I have been wanting to make a show, just haven't had the chance. Ammo in general is still pretty short around here. Spent the day yesterday on a hunt and found no 22 ammo or really much of any type ammo at 10 WALMARTS!!!!! My favorite gun store did have something I picked up though, but that's for another thread.... Sounds like you have plenty to do for a while.... ;D Jimmy

The only thing sporadically available around here is shotgun ammo. I see it as an opportunity to stock up on slugs, 00 buck and bird shot of various sizes. Still spending my ammo budget, just not on rifle or handgun ammo for now.
Yesterday down at the ranch, I was blowing clean holes through a sheet of 1/2" OSB at about 160 yards with slugs, using a smooth bore. Very basic 2-3/4" Brenneke style Remington and Winchester slugs - not sabot rounds. They have a surprising amount of energy way, way out there ........seriously.
I'm going to have to set up some heavier lumber targets to see just how hard they are still hitting out past 200 yards.

Energy = .5 * weight * velocity^2 / grains / 32.175 or Energy = weight * velocity^2 / 450450 1 oz slug at the muzzle at 1,600 fps 2,489 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. Sited in at 100 yards, it should be around 1.5" site height, 34.6" drop at 200 yards ~670fps @ 462 foot pounds of energy. The larger cross section will drop the penetration but it will expend the energy fast. The only thing sporadically available around here is shotgun ammo. Haven't been to any since last fall....I'm a junk box digger....and from everyone was telling me was, lines out the door, and when inside.... lines kept moving, when some one asked a price, that answer was short curt, with a "Hey if you don't want it the guy behind you does"......Not my kind of atmosphere.
Ammo on most everything still short, mostly no .22, .22 mag, .223, 308...or if they do, 2 box limit. That's a Gander Mountain in Kenosha, WI (getting to be a real good shoe store.....) walmart, and several mom and pop places.

cwi,
Thanks for the math - I hadn't even thought about checking the numbers. To me, that's a good amount of energy/velocity for defensive use against soft targets. After shooting a good number of Foster/Brenneke style slugs with open sites on a shotgun, I have a decent feel where it's going to land and how to get it there. Never stopped to think about BDC in inches or percentages like I would with a scoped rifle.
A few years ago, I wouldn't have thought of lobbing 12ga slugs out that far. Now I think more along defensive possibilities. I bought my first 12ga in 1968 (still have it) and I always considered 125 yards the outer limit. Not now.
With practice, I'm thinking that a 12ga slug could be an effective anti personal round way out there.
Thanks again,
Marc

Marc,
The energy is there. The trick is delivering it at 200 yards. It's got me thinking along these lines as well. Especially if a person adds some of the adapters woodzy posted up..

Didn't hit the local gunshow this weekend. But, I did find a website (local to La.) that list great finds that are available locally. Well, some are online. I was able to order some primers from BassPro. The order still says "in process" for 3 of the 4 primer types that I ordered. One is listed as "back ordered". This really makes me feel a little better that I might actually get 3 of the 4. We'll see when I have them in hand.

We had some nasty weather over the weekend. Severe thunderstorms, tornado watches and warnings and lots of rain. When the weather started to clear on Sunday I went to a show that was in town. There was a pretty good crowd there. I asked how attendance was during the really bad weather and was told the lines were as long as they always are.
Lots of ammo available - even some bricks of 22lr. Prices for most of the vendors was still very, very high. The vendor with the bricks of 22lr was selling them for $75. Glad I don't need any. When the price comes back down - and I believe it will - I'll get more. Wanting and needing are two different things.
I did pick up Ruger Single Six - 6-1/2" barrel, satin finish, wood grips.

Hey what do ya know the wife and I did the same thing got in pretty quick and stood in line for a while and picked up some much needed ammo and reloading supplies. The prices were a bit much so that limited on what we could get but at least we found some. Being that were in SoCal it was nice to just find some ammo at all. I have to say that the crowds wern't as bad as last time we went.
