I want to learn Mandarin Chinese, but I am also very interested in learning Spanish. Spanish would be easier, so maybe learn more than the basics I already know and then move on to Mandarin...but then again, I know just enough Spanish to get by already, so why not start learning Mandarin basics...
I also think knowing a basic amount in Arabic, Persian, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Indonesian might prove to be helpful, considering how many different people are here now. At least enough of each to be able to communicate for medical needs, directions and to be able to tell if someone poses a threat without them knowing you can understand them. I find it easy to understand a language...much more so than to read it or speak it.

Shotgun is a very efficient language... particularly at night. Pretty much universal

MirkwoodWanderer is good with Italian. He's standing next to me, CCM and says, "Salve! L'italiano è una bella lingua, ma pochi personi negli Stati Uniti lo parlano più - ed in Lo Stivale, la lingua è molta varia con i dialetti. Francese, spagnese, arabo, greco, tedesco, ed anche inglese hanno influenzato italiano. Ciao ciao!

Spanish or Mandarin.
Mandarin is a HORRIBLE language to learn and use, though. It's a tonal language, so you have to pronounce things properly, so you basically have to 'make yourself sound asian'. I know it sounds strange, but it's hard to explain and it's really embarrassing to get used to at first.
It's the language I'm using mostly for my work right now and it really is taking some getting used to, but slowly but surely I'm getting there and not so shy about it now.
Spanish will probably work well considering the community of Spanish speakers in the US, I'd imagine that's a valuable language to have for quite a lot of companies there.

Tell him I'm grinning from ear to ear, having understood most of what he said and agreeing with all of it. Ciao back at him!

Um no... he knows I can only piece together what he says in Italian so long as it resembles some French. My Italian is limited to music terminology.

To be hired around here, it's assumed that you're just as fluent in Spanish as English. Given the poor quality of English here, I can only hope that their Spanish is better. My school hired a new secretary this year. I've seen her typos. Knowing Portuguese is another essential; in fact most area doctors' offices can handle all 3.
