That was indeed an interesting read. That sheriff is asking the right questions and sounds like he is interested in knowing the law and his limitations. He should hold monthly classes to explain all of that to citizens so they don't screw up and make his job easier and probably win a lot of votes as well. Thanks

Are you planning on open carry? I have the ability to in my local area and have resisted the urge. I see it as advertisment of the like that I do not want.

Are you planning on open carry? I have the ability to in my local area and have resisted the urge. I see it as advertisment of the like that I do not want. Couldn't agree more. EVERYONE notices and remembers the open carry guy, unless you are wearing a badge. There are too many people who want to "challenge your authority" for carrying a gun - when that isn't your point at all. (Note that I used the word "authority") I like the idea of open carry because: - Someone other than me becomes the first target for the bad guys if things get sideways - I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally "printing" or exposing a gun Some of you may laugh, but I remember everyone open carrying revolvers in holsters and carrying rifles in small ranching communities in California. Concealed carry required a permit, open carry didn't. Heck, every other pickup truck had a rifle rack with a scoped bolt gun and 30-30 lever gun....... nobody thought about it - it was normal. Guns at school were of course illegal, so the High School allowed the guys to park their trucks across the road in a dirt lot, so that they could hunt after school.

Marc has it right. Where I grew up it was nothing to see every pickup truck with a gun rack. .22s and .30-30s hanging in them, unlocked on main street. Not sure they even make those type of gun racks for pickups anymore. I'm sure some cop would pull you over to check..

Back in the day most states had open carry it was common but mostly outside the city. I would call my friend and we would meet at his house. Walk down the road with our guns over our shoulders until we got to the railroad tracks and started hunting. I even took my shotgun to school so I could work on it, nothing was ever said. These times we are living in today are messed up for sure. I'm not worried about the guy with the gun, what scares me is the politician who thinks guns are evil and it's their job to save the world.

IIRC there are 28 states that allow open carry, without a permit. MS already did, per an old state law that needed clarifying. The only reason most don't have gun racks is the safety of the gun itself. As far as carrying myself, it will be a thought process yet. You know the sign of the New South, a BMW with a gun rack.... even in the uk it was a heck of a lot different, i can remeber standing at the bus stop outside the local church shooting pigeons with my airrifle when i was 12, the little old ladies waiting to go to bingo were cheering me on and applauding when i got one.
if i remeber rightly i got 9 and the vicar (mr minns, no reverends in the coe) gave me a pound, which i promptly spent on cigarettes lol

This style of rifle carry for truck/SUV is popular around here. (I miss the old "Easyrider Rifle Rack" But then, we are already allowed to carry a concealed weapon in your car without a permit. Marc

Marc I think you live in Texas if I remember and you probably are more familiar with the law than I am but I was under the impression without a CCW the only place you can carry in a vehicle is in plain sight, it can be loaded but has to be either on the floor board and visible or on the seat visible. I wasn't aware you could conceal it on your person or vehicle without a CCW.

Other way around - Texas is kind of backward on this - IMHO. We are not handgun open carry friendly - permit or not. (It's being worked on!)
- You must have a permit to carry a concealed handgun on your person, except on private property. - The "private property" extends to any vehicle that you have control of, your business, hotel room, etc. - OK to carry concealed while transporting the handgun to and from. - The concealed weapon carried in these circumstances may by loaded, with spare mags adjacent or attached. - Without a CCW permit, you may not conceal carry as a passenger - unless the driver is your spouse.
Technically, having a handgun in plain sight in your car, could be "brandishing" that weapon for the purpose of intimidation.
Open carry of a handgun on your own land is allowed, and is overlooked when hunting on other folks land anyway!
Rifles are different.
