No mountains around here and we only really get the two-legged threats around here so for that I carry a Springfield XD subcompact in 40 s&w.

I guess the only gun I've ever actually carried on the trail is my S&W .380. I used it once to shoot a rattler. My preferred holster is my right front pocket. I also carry it on the sidewalk if that counts...

For here in Tennessee, I enjoy my Springfield Armory XDM 45 ACP.

I've carried three different handguns on the trail. I've carried the Glock 22, the Browning Buckmark .22 LR and a Taurus TCP738 .380acp. The Glock is to heavy for more than an over nighter or two...the Buckmark is great for a survival situation....not too heavy and plenty of ammo can be taken where as the Taurus .380 is a "get off me" gun...intended for two legged threats.

I'm with Will. The S&W Bodyguard is my EDC, and there aren't any 4-legged predators in my area to worry about; just the 2-legged kind. If I have my backpack with me then I've got a couple other goodies packed in there within easy reach.
