Well, it looks like the chickens and coop might be a reality.
I saw some on Craigslist that looked promising. But, no coop or run built yet. DH said that if the sellers could hold them for us he'd get it done ASAP.
So now I am looking for some definite plans and trying to pull this together.
I wasn't going to get a rooster but I saw some that looked promising. The people said they were hand fed, will sit on your lap, very tame and likely would be nice to the hens. So I'm going to take a chance on one of them. We do have a lot of predators so he'll be useful to help protect them. I'm hoping if I bring them all to the new coop at the same time there will be minimal issues. I'll keep the roo separate but with them and see how it goes.
They are all about the same age but from different places.

Sure wish we could do something like that here. I have some students whose families raise chickens in the basement in order to avoid the ridiculous zoning rules.

Sweet, nothing like the taste of fresh eggs. You only want to have one rooster or you're asking for trouble. My rooster was bought separately from my hens and he isn't mean and is very protective of his girls. I bought him much later than the hens which were already laying. I was hoping a hen would set on some eggs to hatch them but it hasn't happened yet. Below is a food chart for foods and snacks they can or can't eat. Hope it helps. Mine free range during the day and get locked up at night from predators. www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens

Yep, Only one roo and if I don't get one of these then I may not get one. He is a blue Sumatra (sp) mix. and while I hadn't planned on naming chickens that might not be around that long due to predators and whatever can befall chickens, I will likely name him Elwood. Jake is just too common. Thanks for the link. I will probably need all the help I can get.

Other members raise chickens and will probably add their two cents. Good luck and keep us updated.

Well, the coop building starts today. This thing is going to be a palace. NhCraigT does not cut corners. Even the walls will be insulated. If it is done by the end of the week I can go get the chickens on Sunday.

Great news and the chicks will appreciate their new castle. Looking forward to seeing what he comes up with once it's built.

The link works.. is the 'trench' the lay out for the yard? That will be quite a nice coop. I see what you meant when you wrote 'castle'.. Glad you're getting the chickens.. just in time for winter. What kind of heat will you use for them.. heat lamps?
