Pleasant surprise at Walmart this morning. They had a whole stack of bulk boxes of 1,000 rounds of Federal 5.56 in 62gr green tip for $0.42/round. (The longer 62gr bullets really like my 7:1 and 8:1 twist barrels) They are head stamped LC, so it's the real Lake City brass at least) I've never seen these 1,000 round boxes in our local Walmart until today. I was there to get some more 12ga 00/slugs and more canned/dry goods for longer term storage. They offered to let me get my 3 box limit - but one box was already a huge budget buster for me! But I just couldn't stop myself....... maybe I need an intervention........ Nah! I just need to buy another couple dozen Magpul-30's and head down to the ranch! But seriously, my budget is very tight right now. I had some $100 bills in my pocket because a friend repaid a loan that I thought I would never see again. Whether it's taxation, inflation or shortages (likely all three) we won't see today's cheap ammo prices ever again. Because it's not perishable, it just makes sense to put some ammo up, along with other obviously critical items like canned/dry goods, water, medications, hand tools and so, so many other supplies. I will break this into multiple lots and spread them out to different places with desiccant packs. But, now I'm having buyers remorse and missing the canned/dry goods that I went there to buy! Just can't make a prepper happy I suppose Marc

Yesterday, ours was heavily stocked with rifle ammo from .223 up through 300 mag, but it was weak on handgun ammo. About all they had was .45 auto,.357 Sig and .38 special. They had a few bricks of .22lr, but it was expensive so I skipped it.
I have a feeling that mots Walmarts that sell ammo are getting it in, it just sells out as soon as it hits the shelf. I don't even bother looking for the popular ammo after about 8:30 AM - it's gone by then. For example, they sold 15 of those big cases of 5.56 (above) yesterday. I've personally watched 10 cases of 5,500 rounds of 22lr go across the counter before 8:00 AM. This is a store in a town of only 7,000 people.
Other places like Cabela's and Academy Sports also have increasing stocks of ammo on the shelves, but they are more expensive and for me, an hour away.
Ammo is being produced at a record rate, but people are still buying it up at an incredible pace. My purchase yesterday was out of character for me. I generally pick up a few boxes at a time along with other supplies.
I think that most ammo buyers are simply remembering to do it on a regular basis instead of sporadically. As long as we don't have another Government driven panic, I suspect that the buyers will hit their saturation point in another 3-4 months. I know that I have enough for now, so I will just replace what I shoot - but I love to shoot..........

Green tip is just steel core - not armor piercing tungsten tipped.

Looking back over the last 12 months is a clear lesson of how fragile our product supply chain really is. This of course applies to virtually everything we buy. Marc

Marc That's why I buy things if I have the funds when I see the items at a good price. We cant even get 22lr at our local Walmart. Yes, you coughed up $420 beans but I still think you did good. Salt Lake rounds were going for $800 at cheaper than dirt just not long ago.

Marc Went by Walmart yesturday and they had 6 cases of 1000. I couldnt get my hands on it because of a tight budget. I went back to walmart today and all 6 cases were gone

I picked up the same box at the gun store where my son n law works, but I got them for $319 (his discount) they had everything I wanted, even .22's so I turned the trip into an ammo run. If some one had stopped me with all that ammo in my trunk they would have probably arrested me. Picked up a new toy as well, I couldn't resist for 1k, used but in good shape and already customized. I'll post a pic later today. FINALY GOT PICTS TO UPLOAD

Man, that's a great cheap deal, Woody!
As far as I can tell, that's below what most gun shops are paying when they buy a full pallet. My insider contact told me that distribution channels for Federal are running around $0.34 to $0.36 per round to give the retailers room for a 25% markup.
I wouldn't have pondered as long as I did at that price! I'm impressed!

The shop (Shooters) is still doing 80k a day in business, it has been crazy he said. The price I get it for is the price the shop pays for it. But he buys by the semi load not by the pallet. He always sells to employees and some employee relatives at cost. I get to be included for several reasons, but mainly because about 5 years ago I pulled the owners youngest son out of the TN river when he fell from a breached dam. I was allowed to fish there because I agreed to take his kids with me. I found out later they were not supposed to be on the dam, but no one told me.
Hank Williams Jr. fishes and hunts with him when he is staying at his place in Paris, TN. I got to go fishing, quail and duck hunting with them a few times. I can go anytime I want if I am in town when they are going. But I don't do much of that any more. I want to I just can't do the physical parts.
Hank Jr. helped me find the new retreat I am putting together near Paris. I wonder some about Ft Campbell being right near there, but maybe it will be ok. I also worry how far the Mississippi river will back up too, though I am more than 50 miles and 400 feet higher there. It didn't flood during the last recent flood so maybe. However it's also near the New Madrid fault line, which might become a problem too.
But the place I have had in SC for the last 15 years is on a fault line and a little low in elevation as well at 345' so I will just have to live with it.
Still have a place in east TN but nothing set up or I don't even feel it is isolated or big enough. Oh well, nothing is perfect.

I continue to be amazed at the sheer volume of ammo being sucked up by the American public. The major manufacturers have been running at max capacity for a very long time.
I live outside of a small town in Texas, and I have watched one heck of a lot of ammo go across the counters in the months since the last election. My ammo supply is self limiting based on available funds, but it would appear that others aren't as limited! I'm hearing folks talk in tens of thousands when they used to talk thousands. That's a big deal in my view. There is no way to verify this, but my gut tells me that "we the people" are more armed than ever before - way, waaay more.
At the risk of being repetitive, I hope that all of these folks remember the basics in preparing for a tough future. It takes more than a whole lot of ammo to survive long term. I have no illusions of surviving a full-on firefight. I just want enough to be enough.
