Storing whiskey as part of your preps can prove beneficial in many ways. Man's desire to have it goes way back because of it's many uses for comfort, medicinally and as a trade item. I like reading western history so I'll go there to talk about it but alcohol was in the picture much longer than then too.
Early settlers traveling in covered wagons faced many hardships along the way. Famine, drought, illness, hostile enemies and even death, just to name a few. Rainstorms were another, can you imagine being cramped in a covered wagon with your family and all your provisions during such an event. And, these journeys usually lasted five to six months. Not to be overshadowed by hardships there were events of celebration such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, birth of newborns or even reaching a milestone in their travels to get to their final destination. The goal was to travel eleven to twelve miles a day but delays occurred regularly to prevent this. No matter the reason each covered wagon owner stored alcohol as part of their provisions.
The hardships they faced can be compared to the same ones we'd be facing post SHTF. These usually bring on fears, anger, grief, stress and depression and sometimes drinking alcohol did bring some comfort. Of course it should be drank in moderation and even monitored by others in your group as drinking can lead to other more serious problems should someone consume too much.
Happier times were always a cause of celebration when families pampered their selves with large feasts of food and included alcohol consumption. It's having that little extra treat often associated with alcohol to toast those momentous occasions. Along those lines it may just be part of an areas cultural tradition as it is here in Cajunland.
Alcohol does contain medicinal and disinfecting properties as recognized then and still today which is another reason to store it in preps unless you have the knowledge and supplies to produce it yourself post SHTF. As then, cold and cough remedies have been passed down to us generation after generation. It's great for calming the nerves and helps with sleeping disorders. We've all watched western movies where medical tools or knives were sterilized with whiskey. And drank whiskey to alleviate the pain of bullet or arrow removals, kinda like anesthesia of today. Even pouring whiskey on a wound to clean and disinfect it was used then and can be used now if nothing else is around.
Lastly, using alcohol as a trading item is another reason to store whiskey in your preps. Now before you go jumping around like a chicken with its head cut off, there are reasons to consider. Seeking the aid or services of others who have the knowledge and know how to do things and paying them with your own skills or with whiskey. Trading can be done in small circles of friends or small communities. Loved ones become sick, certain supplies may be depleted, clothes and shoes may need mending or being replaced, gardens need planting and tending to, people fish better than others, maybe your crops didn't fare as well as someone else's and you need seeds, building projects, mechanics, reusable parts, the list goes on and on for trading whiskey, especially if you have the knowledge to make your own cuz many people will be seeking it out.
Buy the ritzy stuff or buy the cheap generic stuff, it doesn't matter as it will be sought after, take my word for it.
