A lot of Gerber is made either in china or using china steel.
That said I have a couple of their multi tools and a few of there knives, most of what I have is the older stuff. If it is in an emergency kit for using a couple of time in a pinch, then I will work, they won't hold up to frequent or hard use.
I use cheaper things like these in caches I have that I think may be found, so I am not out much, like Hi-Point guns, if I loss it I am not out much, but if I need it and it's there it's better than nothing.
I will put high dollar stuff in what I will carry or in caches I think won't be found.
Just my .02

I think the Gerber Multitools are mostly US made. The bear grylls crap is all Chicom. Aren't the ASEK series knives US made too?

I have both Gerber and Leatherman, Gerber just doesn't hold up for the long haul, the tools get sloppy fitting, my go to is also a model 300 Leatherman but I also have the wave , skelton, and vise grip.

I have two (much older) gerber 400 series multi tools and a leatherman wingman. They all work very well. I keep my 400 on my hip and it is my go to. However it is over 10 years old.
*After looking at some older pictures (and memories) I realized my Gerbers are from 1995...when I enlisted. I had them on my hip in my BDU's. I didn't realize they were that old. How come 1995 doesn't seem that long ago?

The original gerber multi tool started in 1991. For the early to mid 90's, they were solid tools. They fell off the quality cliff sometime around 2000 in my opinion.

I used to be a gerber fan in the early years, but now shy away from ALL things gerber. Too bad.

I do have and use the newer Gerber knives, no problem with them what so ever. I would be more concerned about my body wearing out way before the knife... the old farts club

I have a gerber folder that I have had great success with. Since this thread, I was given a gerber multitool and I broke one or two of the knives on it, I forget excatly, and something else snapped off. I still have it in one of my tool bags in one of the cars just because I didn't want to trash it but I was less than impressed.
