Light bulb!!! Thank you for this post and the diagnostics. After reading this I realized something, my cousins were being VERY competitive and snotty about their guns and hunting. So much so that I didn't want to learn about it at all and instead took to bows (because they didn't want to learn to shoot a bow).

That illustration shows the correct focus of the sights and good sight alignment, however the sights should be "cutting" the circle in half for a handgun. The "pumpkin on the post" (front sight at six o'clock of the bull) is a rifle sight picture. This sight pic will hit low.

Which is why bullseyes make stupid targets.
Also depends on the shooters grip and how the sights have been adjusted.
I still like a square of blue or orange paper for just that reason. If the sight alignment is correct and its all blue beyond the sight, you just made a hit.
For new shooters use a milk jug or 2 litter bottle full of water. Any hit creates and explosion of water, because any hit with a handgun anywhere on that sized target is a good hit.
There are three types of shooters. Those who shoot, those who shoot at targets and those who shoot targets.
I used to shoot targets. Handgun or rifle I would never be shooting at the bullseye. I was always shooting at six o'clock or three o'clock or 9 o'clock within the bullseye. Or trying to put the next shot into the same hole as the last shot.
I didn't shoot at a deer or at a man. I shot at an eyeball or at an ear. My 500 yard target was the black part of the spade on an ace, my 1000 yard target was anywhere on the card.
Now I shoot at a target.
I only want to hit a pie pan, or a square of paper or a deer/mans head. I'm now longer concerned with hitting the bullseye, I just want to hit the target.
Now if I hit a card at 100 yards thats ok. If I hit a deer/mans head at 300 yards thats ok. If I hit a 9" pie pan at 50 yards and the top edge was a mains chin it will be good enough to hit it anywhere.
Most people should focus on hitting the pie pan faster and forget about the bullseye completely.
Of Course there is the possibility that I can't hit the bullseye every time any more that my standards my have lessened.
