As far as privately minted silver bars and rounds go the ones I hear the best commentary about are;
APMEX This site has a minimum order of $50. I have heard many good things about APMEX
Kitco Minimum order here is $2500.
Northwest Territorial Mint Minimum order varies unless you visit their store in Washington state.
There are many other websites to buy PM's from. Personally I would never buy anything of value from e-bay.
I would also suggest visiting goldismoney2.com and spend some time reading there, you'll learn a lot.
Best wishes and good luck.

Thumbs up on APMEX. I've done business with them and have never had a problem.

I would suggest staying away from EBay for silver or any other precious metals.

I would suggest staying away from EBay for silver or any other precious metals. Any particular reason? As in it may not be what it is claimed to be? I'm asking because DH decided to buy a small amount. I looked on APMEX to try and identify the coin. When I couldn't find anything like it then I asked where he got it and he showed me the eBay listing. I know even APMEX sells on eBay. I also was wondering how privately minted bars and coins measure up to more well known coins and if it really matters if you are only interested in the content of the coin/bar?

Another for APMEX. Look for the specials they offer from time to time.

Another for Apmex I think as long as it's the amount of silver represented then it shouldn't matter. I suppose in a SHTF moment and you're buying something with it and that person doesn't recognize the 'coin, bar or other item' you might have a problem. So do any of you have a way to test if it's the real thing after SHTF?

There has been multiple occasions of salted metals (read fake) on ebay. If it seems like too good a deal, it probably is.

On privately minted "coins"; Private mints such as APMEX and others sell "rounds" and "bars" of precious metals. These have no numismatic value and are not legal tender. Their value is in the metal they are crafted from. "Silver" coins from the US mint are not 100% silver as they contain other metals. Also rounds and bars are sold in ardaviporus ounces; A troy vs ardaviporus (sp?) ounce weighs slightly more. Exact measurements are as follows#1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams or 480 grains #1 ardaviporus ounce = 28.3495231 grams or 437.5 grains

I checked reviews online and found several that seemed to think Silvertowne mint was the real deal and a good company to buy from. I put on my readers (sigh) and looked the coins over. I think they are slight irregulars and that might be why the price was better than most. Some of the coins have a tiny bit of pitting or a small thin scratch on the surface. I didn't see the actual listing for these coins so not sure if it was mentioned that they weren't all perfect.

If you are going to buy from ebay then your best bet is to stick to the sellers with a long history and very positive feedback (more than 99%) especially the most recent. I know apmex has its own profile on ebay as do other private mints. Also, concerning PMs, stick to American sellers. It blew my mind how many silver products were coming from China.
Also, for what it's worth, I find that ebay prices on PMs are almost always beatable by other vendors (including the more legit ones) elsewhere on the internet.

+apmex. If you intend to use silver for barter if economics were to crash and such a thing became an option. Think about smaller pieces then the troy ounces most buy. You don't want your only offer to start at an ounce or any one to know you have an ounce. I keep some "silver" 9mm bullets in 100/120/150 grain, just in case. They tend to flatten out quite a bit when fired into "things" but it makes them easier to find when you dig them back out. Even my bullets have to do multiple duty! Just sayin'

Bought some ounces that are made to quarter by perforations. Don't have a lot but enough to trade for gas or food in a pinch. Most importantly in a carryable weight.
