Coated mine with clear fingernail polish But mud, when you use the striker to create a spark, won't the firesteel catch fire from the polish.

use the seal a meal from another post
make a bag the right size, add a small oxygen absorber, tape the sharp end and vacuum seal it.
make little packets with the firesteel, some tender, etc and seal it up
almost anything you want to store long term can benefit from being vacuum sealed
the process also compresses things like clothes into a smaller size
batteries are something that don't store well so I vacuum seal the batteries for the device and store them together but not loaded.
plus it keeps related things in one package.
I have small packages of gun cleaning kit, first-aid kit, fishing kit
vacuum sealing makes it water proof until you open it, even if your bag gets wet
I want to carry some pool shock, but its so corrosive to everything around it, now I put it in a 3" long piece of 1/2" pvc capped at both ends in a vacuum sealed bag with no trouble
got a weeks worth of meds in separate vacuum sealed pouches so if one day gets wet I have others that don't, although a true teotwawki will get me soon after the meds I have are gone anyway. My plan is to see my family has the best chance to survive that first month.
off track sorry
