I have five gallon pails all over the farm. Not sure if I should just ditch them or if I should hold onto them for a rainy day.
I would imagine they wouldn't be good for oil lamps as they might have toxic fumes. I'm also not sure if they would burn in my oil furnace that supplements our wood furnace.
Does anyone save their used oil? If so, what would you use it for? Thank you in advance for any info!

We use it to oil chains on some of our farm equipment mostly the round baler and manure spreader. Our neighbor has a barrel mounted next to his woodstove that drips a small amount of oil into the stove to make the fire burn hotter. Some people mix old oil with diesel fuel and recharge self rubs for cattle( we just use a concentrated pesticide and diesel).

Our mechanic down the road has some kind of set up to use old oil to heat his shop.

Our mechanic down the road has some kind of set up to use old oil to heat his shop. So does my mechanic. Heats his shop with oil from oil changes. His is a special type of furnace/heater.

Thanks CGU and Geron. Will have to research what type of burner they have. I would imagine it would either have to be a special type of furnace or the oil would have to be treated/filtered in some manner. Thanks again!

Will certainly hold onto a couple pails of it for the purpose of oiling chains and PTO shafts etc. Interesting idea with the drip into the stove! I may have to contrive something like that

If I remember right my mechanic found his on Craigslist or some similar type of resale place. Before that he was heating his shop with a wood stove.

That's some pretty cool stuff. Would love to have me one of those. I'll have to build one when my schedule frees up

they burn hot but may still make for dirty marking at exhaust, just extend the pipe if you are getting oil/soot streaks where it comes out. Just lengthen the exhaust pipe to get it away from the wall of roof and allow the dirty burn to go into the air. Remember extend it horizontal, vertical could effect draw ability.
