Tower And USB Port Trouble

Well been having trouble with my tower, the USB ports work some times. So I leave my computer on once I get it up and running. It's like it has a short in the USB ports, it can take several tries to get it to work. I did have it up and running good for a long time. Then we switch to wireless and had to disconnect form the web and turn it off to load wi-fi. The technician tried to get it to work but didn't have the time to sit and wait for the USB ports to work. So I tried it again today and dam if it didn't come on the first time So for now ill keep it on 24/7 and hope I don't get disconnected...still looking for a new tower but i hate windows 8.1

you try reinstalling your USB drivers? pretty sure i have a couple USB ports that you can add into your tower, will check this weekend

I had the same problem.

I bought one of those five in one ports when I got down to two ports out of five working.

When my mother board failed several months ago I asked the repair guy I use about "replacing" the bad USB ports.

Since my motherboard is a large laptop, the USP ports are built in and not replaceable.

However,

He took some electronics cleaning solution on a q tip and "cleaned the insides of the ports, then he gently applied "squeezing" pressure to the ports.

He said they get "gummed" up and "stretched" out from the attachments being pushed in and pulled out over and over again. Sometimes a "pin" will get bent.

He recommended you clean the male parts of the devices used with a quick drying electrical connection cleaner, disk cleaning solution, or alcohol.

He also said you can clean the inside of the female part the same way

BUT

If you want to clean the female part make sure your computer is unplugged and the battery is out, so there is no chance of any short

and to make sure they are completely dry before turning it back on.

I have a docking station with four ports. I have external hard drive connected to them, but they stay connected all of the time, very little plug unplug activity and they have never failed.

It is the plugs I switch thumb drives and headphones or mouse, ect into that I had trouble with
