H5N2 found at Jefferson County poultry farm. Very sad.Bio-security for your livestock is essential. "The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that it has confirmed the highly pathogenic H5N2 strain in a commercial flock of 200,000 chickens in Jefferson County of southeastern Wisconsin. The USDA says state officials have quarantined the premises and birds there will be killed to prevent the spread of the disease. Turkey producers have lost over 1.2 million birds to the disease across the Midwest. This is the first time it has struck a commercial chicken farm in the region. Authorities say there is no risk to public health and no danger to the food supply. No human cases of the virus have been found in the U.S. The Wisconsin Department of Health is working with poultry workers at the Jefferson Co. facility. DHS is working with them to make sure they are taking proper precautions. DHS reminds consumers poultry and eggs should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees to kill bacteria and viruses." m.channel3000.com/news/Wisconsin-records-1st-outbreak-of-dangerous-bird-flu-strain/32339370This youTube by the Oregon Dept. of Ag. re backyard chickens and bio-security easy steps to take is very good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1mWR2pashY

Now 2 more sites in WI with H5N2 and one is more of a backyard farm place. Too scary. US: Wisconsin reports two more H5N2 outbreaks
Via the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection: Avian influenza detected in Juneau and Barron County poultry. Excerpt:
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, in cooperation with the US Department of Agriculture is responding to the detection of avian influenza in an additional two poultry flocks in Wisconsin. There are now three cases in Wisconsin. These flocks are within the Mississippi flyway where this strain of avian influenza has previously been identified. While lethal to domestic poultry, the strain of virus detected is not known to have caused disease in humans and is not expected to pose a risk to public health or the food supply. The affected flocks are in: • Juneau County—40 mixed breed birds in a backyard flock • Barron County—126,000 turkeys in a commercial turkey flock The properties were immediately quarantined and neighboring properties with poultry will be notified about the situation. Remaining birds will be depopulated and will not enter the food supply. Following USDA protocols, surveillance and testing procedures are underway at properties near the affected facility to ensure the virus has not spread. The H5 avian influenza virus was first detected in Wisconsin at a commercial chicken flock in Jefferson County on Monday, April 13, which will result in the depopulation of more than 180,000 egg-laying chickens. Multiple outbreaks of avian influenza have occurred most recently in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, the Dakotas and Kansas leading to the depopulation of more than 1 million turkeys and chickens since January.

I heard that chicken meat, turkey meat, and eggs are going up in price. It should be a very short term spike for chicken and eggs.. They will have a flood of chicken hit the market in roughly 3-4 weeks since they have already replaced all the kill off. The eggs won't be far behind that since most the chickens that where killed off where older birds about to be replaced. We should actually see a fairly decent price decrease in chicken shortly since they will all cycle to market at roughly the same time and not staggered. Least that is the word from the folks I know in the industry I am not sure if many here have noticed here but with the corn glut and hog production back to normal after their kill off a while back pork prices are finally falling again. Bacon!

We've not seen price drops here. Bacon is $4/lb unless it's on sale. Eggs here (jumbo) typically run $3/dozen, sometimes as low as $2.50. Anything other than "jumbo" is small here. I used to buy "small" eggs in college; what is now sold as large is about that same size.

Was running $6 lb for decent bacon around here until recently... time.com/3889386/bacon/

Decent bacon... you must mean something other than pure fat, right?
The turkey bacon goes for $9/lb. Go figure.

My prices were for the cheapest of the cheap. $11/lb is the new norm for brand-name stuff. It's crazy and getting crazier all the time.

I don't even deal with the scraps they call strips. I buy the thick bacon and use it in various dishes. It's not just for breakfast at my house.

inflation is just a tax
taxation without representation
when you tax people beyond their means to pay you get revolution

Salt pork is another way to purchase good bacon when you can find the real deal... Well I'll give you a hint where salted pork is very popular to cook with and can be bought at the store by the shoulder and all sliced up. But... I can tell a difference and have switched to bacon.
