Made this side handle baton (Tonfa) out a broken maul handle for the shaft and an old oak file handle for the handle portion. Came out pretty sturdy and is very light. Its good for practice and would put a lump on ya but its nothing compared to a composite modern one. Dont think Id take into battle but, its fun to mess around with. For the shaft, I "boned" it with a large round shafted screw driver to tighten the grain up a bit and threw a little heat treat on it too. Here's how it came out:

Nicely done. Looks great and I'd hate to get smacked with it. How long is it?

Its a little shorter than a regulation one, but it covers my forearm just past the elbow and extens about 5in forward of the handle. I fastened the handle by wedging it in the main hole, gluing it and running a dowel rod thru it with glue. Sturdy, not indestructable though. Oh, forgot to say there are three coats of spray on semi gloss polyurathane finish.
