Well, I just turned 60 this summer and went in for my annual eye exam (2 years from the last as we were moving).
The doc says I have the start of cataracts in BOTH eyes and asks me questions about my allergy drugs. History in my family is they begin if at all in the late 70s-early 80s. My mom is 84 and just had surgery 4 years ago.
He said oral meds like SINGULAIR, Zyrtec, Claritin and all inhaled cortosteroids like Nasonex, Nasocort (OTC), Advair and the lot are known to cause CATARACTS decades earlier than normal!!!!
No one mentioned this to me in my many checkups and re-ordering of the prescriptions. And I asked!
Not the allergy doc, my GP or any of my nursing relatives. Of course I read the enclosures as if there is a contraindication, I get it as I am drug sensitive and have serious side effects (stop breathing type) form morphine, codeine and all synthetic forms of those such as Fentynal and also Versed, the wonder twilight sleep drug that I cannot have. But these were listed as slightly related and not as an often seen side effect.
He said all eye docs knew about this. I was put on these drugs only 1.5 years ago and they are wonderful - I can breathe almost all day long without acute facial pain, headaches, and such.
But I would never have taken them had I known. I ALWAYS ASK. And now I am going to have to have surgery (not now, he will watch them for getting bigger) without any drugs! Since my 3 C-sections without ANY drugs (yup, that's right) I have avoided anything that might cause me to have surgery (like for carpal tunnel in both hands). I always joke that if I get hit by a car, have them back up over me as surgery without drugs or undergoing intubation and full anesthesia would likely kill me anyway.
Just wanted you all to be aware as WOW who would think this was so well known and yet no one told me or me for my DAUGHTER who was prescribed this stuff also. Luckily, she, in a fit of youth, decided not to take them.
