I got out my aluminized bubble wrap rectangle and stuck it up in our big east-facing living room window today. This works wonderfully to keep the sun from heating up our house, saving us lots of money on power bills over the blistering summer here near Phoenix. We have these in several of our biggest windows. You can find this stuff online or if you're lucky in your local big box home improvement store. I'm pretty sure Home Depot carries this stuff in rolls for about $25. Just cut to fit your window, finish the edges with duct tape for durability over the years, and shove it up in the window. When the hot weather is done, roll it up and stow it behind a big piece of furniture until next summer. Some people desperate to save on AC bills in 100 degree heat cover their windows with aluminum foil, but this is way easier to put up and take down, and reusable for many years.
Make one to use inside the windshield of your parked car too. It really works.

We do the same thing, it is very effective. Over the course of the Summer it can save hundreds of dollars. I think this Summer will be a HOT one. The water tables are already down over this way. Drought will be something to watch as well.
