I searched but didn't see anything on the forum. I had a neighbor just ask me if I had a tool to open a locked truck. (He locked his keys in the truck.) I didn't, but started wondering if I need to get something. My wife and I each have keys to both vehicles, so in normal times, I don't think it is an issue. But, what about SHTF?
What do you guys (and gals) think? If I need to get one, what do I get? I have a 1984 toyota pickup and a 2010 toyota corolla.

I took geron's advice and hid my spare inside the bed of my truck. If it falls, which I doubt, it will fall inside the bed of the truck.

I put a generic tag on the front tag mount of our vehicles (non-truck vehicles) and duct taped a spare behind the tag. Probably wouldn't work for these new fangled electronic gadget key thingies. If you have an old new fangled electronic gadget key thingy you might be able to take the key off tape it behind the tag and use it manually in an emergency. I've done that also.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2010 has a smart key, the 84 does not. Then there are legal issues, while Alabama is a show intent state (law has to prove you had criminal intent), in Louisiana it can be considered evidence of criminal intent (it is assumed by possession to be criminal intent). You don't want to travel into TN with one either.
The 2010 wouldn't start without the smart key. There are ways around that, but it's not a good idea to have that sort of gear around.
For SHTF purposes, I suggest some inquiries into who does repo in your area. Experienced repossession personnel have the largest base of knowledge for most of that.

Thank you everyone. CW, I had not thought about the legal issues. That is why I love asking questions here.

I always duct tape a key to the back side of my license plate on the rear of my vehicle car washes or winter weather in Michigan doesn't effect it

One immediate effect of it hitting the fan is the collapse of law and order. However, staying out of jail in the here and now is important.
