I got a seedless watermelon for $1.89, 2 pineapples "peeled" and cored for $.89 each, and 8 kiwi fruit for for $1...All on sale. I decided to dehydrate a bit of it...I used half of one of the pineapples for a pineapple upside down cake for Carols work party, and somehow my kiwi vanished after I got home and I only managed to save 3 of them from the grumbly tummy monster!! The lil neighbor gal came over and brought her little girl (3 1/2 years old) with her...when the little girl saw what I was making she squealed with delight and jumped up and down clapping, laughing and saying, "Candy..candy...Dinky makes me candy"!! She is to cute!! So...here a a few pics of what I did...and my entire house smells DELICIOUS!!! I do not like to dry canned fruit...I prefer to do fresh when I catch it on sale...tastes much better IMO.
This is not my dehydrator, mine burned up. This is Carols...so if anyone knows where I can find a good cheap Excaliber, let me know...I don't care if its used as long as it works. This dehydrator doesn't have a temp control, timer or anything on it, just plug in and its running...so I am just playing the guessing game with it. I REALLY don't like it and it makes me nervous using it...but beggers can't be choosy. I will post pics and let you know how it all turns out!!
fruits and dehydrator...I saved the kiwi after this pic was taken.
Pineapple "peeled" and cored...
slice pineapple to 1/2" thick rings...
Cut pineapple rings into 1/8th or bite size pieces...
slice watermelon in half and then slice one half into 1/8th pieces...
remove rinds and slice into 1/2" thick pieces, then cut each piece into bite size chunks...
Saved kiwi...the lucky 3 of 8 ...
Kiwi peeled. Most people are turned offby the color and seeds...try a ripe one and you will love them...
Slice kiwi into 1/4" thick slices...next to GOOD strawberries, this is my favorite fruit so far...
Place all fruits in dehydrator and turn on...I leave the bottom tray empty and put the fruit roll up plastic on it to catch any juices and reduce messes.
MMMMM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!!!!!! Even my cat is walking around sniffing the air looking for the food! ;D
