First step is find someone with some experience that is willing to teach you some ins and outs. Lots of wood working associations you can join for a very small annual fee. The knowledge is invaluable. I wouldn’t have been able to purchase tools much less the instructions had it not been for my friend who said ‘just come on over and I’ll teach you what I can’. I buy glue, sandpaper, etc and share my free wood with him. Plus I teach him marketing. He told me I was responsible for 75% of the money he made last year. I laughed, said thank you and that he was responsible for 100% of the money I made last year. His shop, his tools, his knowledge. Plus we established a great friendship again after not having seen him in 35 years. In the last three weeks we made (and I sold) 11 coffee scoops and three letter openers. Win-win. Second step-just jump in and enjoy it. We have a great time laughing and making things. Third! Take a class. I signed up for a three week class, two three hour night classes a week for three weeks. I’ll be learning how and making an outdoor rocking chair. $130 at a vo tech school. Yeah I have to drive an hour each way each night but it’ll be worth the effort. Looking forward to it. Down the road I’ll make that money back when I sell my first rocker.
