Sweet potatoes work GREAT in big containers but I had very spotty luck with regular potatoes. Followed all the info and just low return as compared to any size plot or raised bed. YMMV

I have 3 large growbags with Yukon golds. I'm so wet here that I can't get them in till late and then they usually rot. If these grow bags work I'll do more next year . . . if I'm still in this particular time/space continuum.

I grow most of my potatoes in a raised bed, which I've had com-fey growing in since last SEPT. The soil is just buckets loads from my compost heap. I don't pull up the com-fey I just dig a deep hole, put my potatoe in and cover it with the dirt from the hole and the com-fey I dug up.
When the potatoes start to come up I hill them with some potting soil and let them grow. The com-fey keeps growing and shades + mulches the plant and as I keep hilling the com-fey grows on the mound. It starts to get to hot here about July so I built a half-round greenhouse like structure from PVC pipe that just fits my raised bed, is about 4' high and open on both ends. I have shade cloth stretched over it. rain goes thru the shade cloth. Sometimes the potato plants get to big for the cover and bend over, but they seem to produce ok anyway. I have the same frame with plastic over it I use when I plant stuff in the spring, like the com-fey, or a few spring plants I want to grow, like Squash/Cucumbers/onions/Carrots/beets/Beans and peas/greens such as spinach, kale, and chard, things that don't require much attention. I don't do much of a garden because we have a farmers market here and they do so much better at it then me.
I had a much bigger greenhouse I would plant with a fish tank inside but it was more then I want to take care of and a friend gives me all of the Tilapia I want, don't worry I eat quite a bit of wild salmon too.
I can take the frame down to work the raised bed, but I had to make some "tent" stakes to hold it down in the wind.
