New year, new boss, new team members. Boss wants to get the team good and tight, and figured a good way to do that was to do some activities where everyone learns how to solve a problem that isn't necessarily Marine Corps or music-related. So, this weekend, I'm going to teach the young guys multiple ways to start and maintain a fire! We'll go over tools, kindling sources, how to recognize seasoned wood from green, etc. Boss recently said to us to keep an eye on the weather and that may change when we do it, but I told him in private I'd rather do the lesson in inclement weather as it would instill a lot more confidence in the team members to be able to successfully start and maintain a fire in bad weather vs only good weather. Everyone's excited about it regardless, and depending on how well it goes we'll do more on other survival subjects.

Finally happened.
It took so long to execute because of team members being absent for various reasons and I didn't want to leave anyone behind. They learned how to identify seasoned wood, several different things that can be used to start a fire (including trying out a ferro rod with a knife or other steel object), and how to identify trees and which ones burn well out here. We rucked from one end of the forest line to a recreation area where we applied what we learned, and I cooked duck eggs & quail eggs for everyone as well as made pine needle tea.
Next time I'm thinking on teaching how to ID edible plants around here along with making unknown water safe to drink.
