On August 23 I officially transferred to the Army from the Corps, and ever since then every day has been uncharted territory of some kind. The first is that I'm out here at Fort Sill by myself while the family's still in North Carolina. Reason being is I'm to set up the family move out here and then go home to make the move happen. I've never moved from one base to another by myself since 2010. The first challenge was MEPS had my flight land not in the airport near the station, but out in Oklahoma City. No idea why, but thankfully my sponsor was ok with driving out there to pick me up. Once we got to the base we started getting bounced around like pinballs from one building to another as no one knew what to do with me since I wasn't here as a trainee in any capacity. Next bit was MEPS didn't give me all the paperwork Fort Sill was expecting out of me. It was more challenging, and frightening for that matter, that no one in admin saw me on the Army side via their computer systems for about 36 hours after I arrived, and it took longer for my family to show up as well. Thankfully that all got rectified, and I also got issued most of my uniforms. I wowed my fellow band members out here by being the first to be issued and fitted for the "Pinks & Greens" which is a modern take on the green/khaki service uniforms from the WW2-Vietnam era.
Right now by far the biggest challenge is finding a roof for my family and our stuff. There's literally no option on base or off base, and the base landlord openly said my family's at the dead bottom of their priority list for any family that rates the type of house we do. One thing I really don't like about the Army is the priority for housing is based solely on rank as opposed to actual familial needs. The only options off base is to buy a house vs rent one, and I've been trying to avoid buying a house up to this point especially since we're still on the base landlord's waiting list. Since this is a training base all the staff enlisted and officers get the dibs before I do even though they're only here for no more than a few months vs me being here for three years. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that my command is getting impatient with me for not having a place yet, and also to grant me the time to make the move happen. Reason being is they want to use me ASAP; which I'm not opposed to, but I can't really help it if there aren't any available places on or off base.
On a different subject has anyone heard from cajunlady? I haven't seen any activity in some time, and Ida just rolled through her neighborhood.
