Darn near in spitting distance from my usual haunts. This is a GREAT pic, but a little scary. Bears and wolves are one thing, cougars are quite another. Unpredictable and powerful, these guys don't see you as a threat like other animals. They see you as FOOD. www.detroitnews.com/article/20120719/METRO/207190400/1409/rss36

First one I've seen that was clear and crisp. They say it is about 6 ft and about 120 lbs.

OK, the cougar pic was in a different article. I thought I missed a link within the first article somehow. Nice kitty!

Dang CW it's a beautiful animal but it's not kewl for it to be hanging around in your stomping grounds. Make sure to alert those in your group so they'll be alert as well. Maybe it'll decide to vacate your premises and find a more remote spot.

When I go out there, even though there are bears and wolves, I usually don't carry at all times. I have never had trouble there, and usually any confrontations have been mutually respectful. You go your way/I go mine. But big cats don't work that way. I hate to think about having to kill such a beautiful creature, but they are a lot like sharks and simply won't stop until they ARE stopped. I think from now on, I'll be bringing a .45 with me. 9 mm are probably not going to do enough damage if it becomes necessary to shoot. This guy is too close to home for me to ignore. I love wildlife, and I don't want to be one of those people who is always looking at animals as some type of trophy to put on the wall. But sometimes you have to take extreme action to preserve life and limb. I am sure that those ranchers near you will prove to the DNR that the cat exists by dumping it's carcass on someone's doorstep eventually. You can't let a predator keep killing your livestock. It is a shame that it has to come to that, but those cougars won't stop once they have a taste for easy prey, be it sheep, cattle or people.

Cat meat is an excellent source of protein.

After getting plaster casts of the prints and actually spotting it, we reported it to the wildlife authorities. Mainly because there are several cattle ranches in that area. Some official came out to see what we had and then informed us that cougars are not found in North Carolina and that we had dog tracks. My friend told him he may want to find another line of work.

What part of NC? We have heard their calls up around South Mountain. Thats were my mom grew up and they heard them all the time. There is a difference in a Mt lion and a bob cat call.

Sounds like the same genius that told us there are none in this area.
