I found a couple new ideas for keeping preps hidden in the home as well as shelter access...the access could also be used as an access for a hidden escape route from inside the home. I just thought these were worth sharing since most folks have these 2 items in their home, and it would not take much to modify and make these ideas doable. As for the hidden access...you could easily create a concrete brick wall in basement creating a hidden "safe" room and disguise it to look like a regular basement wall along with a seperate hidden outdoor access. Just a couple ideas I thought some might find useful...and maybe set your brains to figuring out other ideas. Let me know what you think. I am thinking the tabs for opening them could be hidden so opening would be more "secretive", and for the access door, make a heavy duty "camoed" sliding door above the stairs/ladder as well so when you go down, you can slide it shut and IF someone opens the door, they see open empty space with a floor suitable to hold a large amount of weight...that also locks from below to keep anyone from opening it above you.

The stair idea would work but you would need to make sure there is no access from the side or underneath, since a lot of staircases use the space underneath as storage.
And I really like the island with hidden escape. I'm already thinking of ways to mount a door over the "hole" with certain "normal" items attached that way if the doors are ever opened no one would be any wiser as to what lies below.

My thoughts exactly with the door and items helping to disguise it.
I am thinking with the stairs, a person could still use the space for a storage closet...just put some plywood up below the stairs and drawers to make a smooth wall appearance, rough out the walls the same way, paint it and put in a pull cord light...I dought most people would put together the slight difference in distance the drawers would make. Then you could use every stair for storage.

I really like the idea with the island...the only thing is that it can probably be costly if you make a concrete tunnel X amount of feet/yards to escape from the home. However, if I had the money I would do it. The starirs idea I saw once at a drug traffickers home when a search warrant was issued. The guy had about $700 thousand dollars in one of those steps. We only found the stash because we had brought a drug sniffing dog that alerted to the step on the stairs.

As far as the tunnel goes, you can easily find the larger 4' Diameter metal culvert and install them, if nothing else, a crawl to safety would be worth the trip. I am thinking if it is one end of the basement, it could go down into a safe room, and a tunnel could be added from the outside via a trench. It wouldn't have to be to long, as long as you have a periscope of sorts to check for the all clear before leaving the tunnel, and have the entrance covered or camoed with say a flower bed, or some form of decoration...maybe open into a wishing well of sorts, so you can open and close it inside and climb out, have it surounded by tall flowers or grass so you could climb out adn look around without being seen? There are a lot of ways it could be done recycling used materials, concrete blocks, culverts, etc. As for the steps, that doesn't suprise me...but if you don't have anything illegal in them, its not likely a dog would alert to them...unless it is trained to search for a specific item/items. I dought a dog would be trained to look for food, FAK and camoing supplies, ammo and things like that. But it makes a good point...heavy dope dealers might think to look there. But hopefully if things got that bad, they would have already been taken out of the equation.
