A friend was having recurrant infections in his throat and a tooth on almost a bi-weekly basis for several years. Doc kept prescribing antibiotics. Finally his primary doc suggested he try taking Echinacia capsules. He now take a 400mg capsule every night with supper last January, and has not had an infection in almost 6 months! He gets a bottle of 90 capsuls at Dollar Genral for $3.50 a bottle. I keep a couple bottle on hand as well as growing this plant in my own yard. The roots must come from plants that are at least 2 years old, so plant it now to use later. Its known as the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea).
I was having problems with water retention and my Primary doc suggested I take Dandelion root capsules. I take 1 pill 3 times a day and I haven't had the retention issues since. And unlike prescription water pills, I don't get the extreme urgency or lower stomach pains and it does NOT deplete potassium levels, so no potasium supplement is required with it like with prescription water pills. Jim also takes the dandelion root because of fluid around his heart, under the supervision of a cardiologist...and has been able to stop taking prescription meds for this issue. The chest pains have stopped related to this issue for him, as well as his blood pressure has gone down slighlty!
These are just a couple of examples of herbal remedies that can be taken for different reasons. These are from the roots of plants you can grow in your own yard and process yourself if SHTF and you needed them. I strongly suggest you talk to your physician and pharmacist before taking any of these to be sure they won't interact with any of the other meds you may be on.. Herbal medicine can be a life saver, you just have to learn what to take, what it is for and how to take it.
I will post more about herbal remedies as I talk to the docs and and people using them.
